I am planning my 3rd trip to Africa next year. My first two trips were for all types of plains game and I used my Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic Stainless Steel chambered in 3oo Win Mag with a Leupold 3x to 9x scope. I used Barnes Vortex 180 grain ammo. I really like the rifle and it worked well even for eland. . I have taken 15 animals with this combo

My 3rd trip will be primarily for buffalo and sable so I need to get a 375 H&H for the buffalo. I will probably only use this rifle for the buffalo and dont have any plans to hunt other dangerous game that would require this large of a caliber.

I am looking at the Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic Series 2 chambered in 375 H&H. It has the same look and feel as my Weatherby 300 Win Mag. Has anyone used this rifle for dangerous game?. I have read about 30 or so reviews and it seems to be highly rated. Any feedback would be appreciated

Enjoy your next hunt. Welcome to AH.

Welcome to AH tractormanmike! Hope you'll share your previous and upcoming hunts with us.

Welcome to AH! Haven't owned a Weatherby, so can't comment on your question. Enjoy!!

My friend has a Vanguard 375H&H. He likes it a lot and intends to use it on Buffalo. He is quick to point out that there is 2 Vanguard in that caliber. There is the basic S2, and then there is the Dangerous Game. IIRC, George stated that the DG has better sights and a stiffer, better made stock. He chose the Dangerous Game.

First of all, welcome to AH. Tons of great info here. Congratulations on safari #3!
Now, on to the question of which .375. The idea of getting a Vanguard so it is the same as your .300 has some credence. However, in my opinion you would be better suited to having a rifle with controlled round feed. This is not imperative, but very highly recommended. Examples would be: Winchester M70, CZ 550, Montana, Kimber. No matter what you get, practice a lot and from a full magazine to make sure it doesn’t have any feeding issues.
If you are locked in to another Vanguard, I’d upgrade to the Dangerous Game version. The stock has an aluminum bedding block and the stock material is laminated synthetic.

Welcome to our place Mike. No end of encouragement from the many experienced members here.

Welcome to AH.

I am going to plug the Ruger Hawkeye chambered in .375 Ruger if you only intend for this to be a one or two hunt rifle.
Benefits include:
CRF
$950 new
I bought mine for $750 very slightly used
It is a tough, accurate rifle

Cons:
Unless you reload, I would hesitate. Factory loads are not abundant. You are pretty stuck with Hornady bullets unless you reload.
It is not your vanguard. If you have a true relationship with you vanguard, to the point that you are very instinctive with its handling, I would go that route instead. Buffalo hunting can happen in very close quarters where muscle memory and confidence in your weapon is needed.

The .375 will be good for both with good bullets like Barnes. I have shot everything from Elephant to Springbok with the .375. don't need a bigger one or a smaller one. Bullet weights from 300 to 230 grain. Hydro solids for elephant.

Welcome to AH!
Sorry I’m no help on the Vanguard, but I’ve used a 375 H&H on everything from Cape buffalo down to duiker and caracal. Mostly Barnes bullets. Worked great!
Best of luck and please share your hunt with us!

Welcome and congrats!

thanks to all for the welcoming comments and input on rifle selections. I am not a reloader so I plan to rely on factory 375 H&H ammo. My outfitter recommends the Barnes Vortex ammo 300 grain bullets. He also highly recommends I practice with a 375 ( I agree!) before my safari. So the best bet for me is to buy a 375 and scope and practice with it.

I have been checking on line for a good medium priced 375 H&H rifle. The reviews on the Winchester model 70 have been average and some poor. Not stellar . So it seems like I am down to picking between a CZ 550 and a Weatherby Vanguard Dangerous Game model. It seems the CZ gets the better reviews over the Vanguard

There isnt much of a price difference between the two and my outfitter suggested the CZ 550 American Safari 375 H&H which is model 04211. I have checked lots of on line vendors trying to find this CZ rifle and everyone is out of stock. Not sure why?
Is CZ still making it? Any ideas on where I can find one. I would consider a new one or a good used one.

thanks Tractormanmike

Welcome to AH, Mike.

If you only plan to use the.375HH for the buffalo, you could consider using a rifle provided by your outfitter.
+1

thanks I am new to the site. I cant seem to find the classified ads section. How do I find it.
Click at the top on “Forums”, then go down to the “Deals & Offers” section and then click on “Free Classifieds”.
I think there are several 375 H& H rifles there.
Best of luck in finding what you want! I love my 375 H&Hs!
