Creating a 9.3x62 do it all

I have a Leupold one piece base on my FN 9,3x62 (Husqvarna 640) and I scoped it with a Leupold Vari-X II 2-7. I haven't done any driven boar shooting but I expect my setup would work alright, though I may prefer the Aimpoint for really fast action.

Thanks Bob, the Leupold bases do look good. Tell me, do they need fitting if you get a new set of rings? Or should it be fairly plug and play?

I have never had to fit the Leupold rings other than lapping the inner diameter and in recent years they haven't even needed that. My .375 (also a Mauser 98) has the Leupold quick detachable bases and I have a spare scope that I can switch out anytime I want to with no loss of zero. I'm thinking about putting those bases on my 9,3x62 also.

Good to know, thanks

Hi folks,

With the latest visit to the opticians I have finally accepted that my astigmatism is not getting any better so I will have to submit to putting glass on my 9.3x62.

So, I have a few questions.

Optics - Got 3 optics in mind

3-9x36 Swarovski L - Good for walking around woods or stalking plains game
8x56 Swarovski Illuminated - Will be used for pigs / sitting up for deer at night / dusk
Aimpoint 9000L - works with conventional mounts and great for driven boar (Though could get the H30L if thought to be much better) or do I go for a single point mount and an H1 micro o the front brigde?

So folks, give me the benefit of your wisdom on mounts and changes in optics.

Beautiful rifle HWL, but that mount looks quite high.

Can not be lower, because of rear sight and big scope….

But one can become familiar with….

Dewald, that's good to see.

Must admit I have a folding "Express V" for the barrel and have a replacement Dumoulin 3-position horizontal safety to swap out for the current flag safety. How do you find 250 Savage? (I have an FN Commercial action with a 257 Roberts Lothar Walther Barrel...)

I love the little .250, but given the FNs 1:10” twist i send 100gr Swift A-frames down range at 2800fps. It it was the typical 1:14” settup where 87gr was the limit I might have passed.

The .257 Bob is a fantastic calibre. Somewhere in a dusty safe is an old Pre-64 with my name on.

Rings and bases, EAW hands down is by far my personal favourite! I only own two rifles now with EAW. One is a M-70 takedown built my Winchesters custom shop (many, many years ago). It is a two barrel set .375 H&H & .300 Win. Mag. I always regretted not having a third barrel in .458 Win. The .375 barrel has one scope a Swarovski D.G. model 1.5 to 5 & the .300 Win Mag. barrel has a Kahles scope 2.5 to 9 (I believe) it has there Christmas tree reticle. The Scope detaches almost instantly and the whole assembly has always retained Zero. I have never touched the scope adjustment since the day that I installed the scopes about 30 years ago I believe?

EAW rings and bases are not the easiest to install and if you are not up to it have a company like NECG (EAW dealer) do the installation, you will never regret the purchase or installation.

A pre '64 Bob? Very nice sir. I like my Bob as a light walking / stalking rifle. Use 120gr Nosler Partitions. Doesn't beat muntjac up for carcass damage and hits hard enough to put chunky fallow deer down.

I’d forgotten about EAW, might look into those guys more.

My gunsmith suggested Recknagel which also have a good reputation.

The Aimpoint Rep at SHOT told me there is no compelling reason to pick a 9000 over a T1/T2. They sell well so they keep the style in the lineup. I have several T1 optics, and I really like them. I have a carbine that I will be mounting a T1 on the front bridge. Leaves the entire ejection port open and you can also mount a backup peep on the rear if desired.

Thanks 5shot, that’s not a bad idea and I like the way that looks

I’d initially thought the 9000 as considering the Talley or Leupold bases and rings and those didn’t seem intuitively work with the H/T series smaller Aimpoints. However, something like weaver / picatinny bases on top of each bridge would seem to open that option up.

Rigby is building a rifle for me and are fitting it with EAE apel swing away mounts. I’ve always used Leupold and Talley but these look to be very good mounts.

Thanks WAB. DO you know how easy it is to change between scopes with Apel's? I understood each set of rings / mounts had to be fitted to each set of bases but more than happy to be corrected

Scrum, I just took delivery of the rifle yesterday. It is truly a thing of beauty and the mounts are outstanding. I've put a Swaro Z8, 1-8x on it. It looks to me like other rings could easily be fitted to the bases but I have no prior experience with this system so I would want to get someone with more knowledge than I to provide advice.
