Hello. I have a 375h&h and a 300 win mag but there is a super deal on a 416remmag barrel nearby. Any personal thoughts on this cartridge? I don’t need much of a push to buy it now. i’m fairly large and not recoil sensitive.

Are you rebarreling your .375?

With a .300 Win Mag and a .375 H&H you have the planet covered. I wouldn’t give up my .300 if I already had a .375.

If you’ve got any desire to hunt buffalo, I’ve heard there is a noticeable difference with the .416 without a large jump in recoil.

Buy a 416 barrel that is attached to a receiver and nestled in a stock already and keep your 300 and 375!

What model rifle is your 300?
If you reload, you can easily cover most any actual hunting situation (not shooting animals in the next zip code) with the 375. At the same time unless you are hunting buff, hippo or elephant frequently, not a huge need for the 416 either. But in reality, a cheap barrel is as good an excuse for a build as any! Personally I'd buy the barrel and then buy another gun to stick it on and keep em all

This is easy. If it's a good barrel, but it. Keep the 300 and the 375 and use the 416 on a new gun. No brainer! :)

Barrels even really good ones are pretty cheap. I'd stay with what you have. If you want a little more oomph you could have your 375 H&H re chambered to 375 Weatherby. That will still allow you to shoot 375 H&H factory rounds through it, and with Weatherby handloads or ammo your 300g bullets will whistle along at 2800 fps and those nice 350g Woodleighs will move out at 2550 fps. I really don't think going from that to 416 is much of a jump. You should save up and move up to one of the big 500s ( a nice 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffery)

Yes I use a 416 Hoffman. Hoffman or Remington Ammunition can be used in this rifle.

I own, shoot, hunt with, and love a 416 RM! my rifle is a Win M70 and its traveled the world with me.

the 416 RM is a very versatile hard hitting cartridge suitable for all game that walks the planet. with a proper 400gr solid you have a cartridge that is suitable to bring down a bull elephant from nearly any angle. you can use 300-350gr projectiles to bring down a wide variety of game ranging from impala to cape buffalo. my choice load is the 300gr Barnes TSX over 81.5gr of H4895 which yields 2700fps and brings critters down fast.

I have shot game such as impala, whitetail deer, warthog, and blue wildebeest with my 416. my shots have ranged from 20 yards out to 140 yards using a 1-6x33 scope. ive also competed and taken 2nd place in one of Heym's large bore shooting competitions with this rifle.

I would sell my double rifle before I sold my 416 RM.

I have the Winchester safari and I’m wondering whether I schould I get a muzzle brake. Recoil is, shall we say, “brisk” and is significantly more than the 375. (I have both calibers in Winchester).
I’m using 400 grain Woodleighs.
Very effective and an emphatic killer of all things big or small.
You can handle the recoil so go ahead!

hmmmmm.... my case capacity is a little lower with my 416 Taylor.. but... Im liking this idea.... I hadnt thought about 300 gr TSX traveling north of 2600 FPS for PG and NA game..

time to hit midway and see if they have any 300gr TSX in stock! :)

When you a 416 RM barrel, are you referring to something like Blaser R8 with interchangeable barrels?
I have a 416 RM Winchester model 70 SE. I've only shot one Cape buffalo with it, using 400gr Swift A frame bullets, but it did a fine job. I've also shot 3 Australian Water buffalo with a 375 H&H with 300gr TSX bullets. To be honest, the 375 did just as well as the 416 with similar shot placement. Maybe Cape buffalo are tougher than Water buffalo, not sure, but they have similar body weights.
As for Elephant, from what I've read, the 416 is definitely the right direction to go, even though the 375 would do the trick in most situations.

try my 300gr TSX load on water buffalo, it will knock the socks off any 375 load (y). if i shoot another buffalo it would be with a 300gr TSX or maybe a 350gr A-frame. over the years ive concluded that speed is just as important as weight and unless im shooting solids i prefer lighter bullets. if the concern is penetration, i shot a blue wildebeest in the chest at around 50 yards with a 300gr TSX and the bullet was recovered near the animals tail (the only bullet ever recovered). I shot an impala ewe at around 70 yards with a quartering shot. the bullet broke the impala's right hip and the left shoulder then needed a passport to enter the next country, the animal dropped on the spot.

I have a box of Barnes 350gr TSX I may use on my buffalo hunt this year, if I decide to bring my 416 again. This time it'll be a 416 Ruger instead. Paired with one of my 375s for Eland and everything else.
