Well here I go! I have accepted a contract in Antarctica for the austral winter (feb-oct) as heavy equipment operator working for a Lockeed Martin subsidiary. Traveling from Anchorage to Christchurch today for a couple days of orientation and then down to McMurdo Station the end of the week.
No hunting and no guns...but hope to see a penguin in its natural environment:)
Should be an adventure!!! I will post some pics and n this thread as time and internet allow...

Very cool adventure...........with potential for very cold........

Good luck!

That sounds like a great adventure!

Tuck’em in there... They might freeze off;)

Sounds like a true adventure.... Just like Hawaii, parking our butt on a Volcano.

You can go for a (walk) and visit Scott's and Shackleton's Huts on the island.

I hope you can share some pictures of your experiences there. Stay safe.

Looks like a fun place to work.

Ugh - not me - That time of year it will be a really cold dark place. I have heard wintering over described by military friends as a bit like being deployed on a nuclear submarine for six months. What equipment would they want to operate that time of year?

Oh, I’m jealous! Grand experience! By the way, I saw lots of penguins on the South Island along with funny caution penguin crossing signs! A lot like our deer/elk signs and Alaska’s moose signs. :ROFLMAO::LOL::D

Have fun!! Who is providing the cold weather gear? Isn't that time frame their normal "summer?"

Keep safe and send us pics :D Cheers:

Wow, that’ll be an adventure for sure!

That sound like a great adventure. That's where my daughter wants to go for her graduation present. I am looking at December 2020. I can say that it will be the most expensive trip that I will have ever taken after looking at the various brochures. I could take 3 safaris for the price of that one trip, and you going and getting paid to go.

What an adventure you will have. Stay safe and warm.

Safe travels my friend

Be watching our for updates. Be warm

They provide the cold weather gear. Their seasons are backwards from us so I will be there for the winter feb-oct.

At least the airfield should be operational with all the ice build up. Just having to wait out the storms.

Do you get any breaks in NZ during your tenure?

Probably not much free time in NZ on the way down, but coming back in oct maybe

Make sure you throw the AH App on your phone. It will use less bandwidth for your keeping in touch with AH.
