Taurus TH 9

I am from Namibia
I would just like to be safe with this weapon and not worry about having any difficulty with a magazine or anything. It should be load and shoot.

Availability - Glock or CZ. I find the Glock a more comfortable carry gun.

Get 8 or so friends together and organize a class with a good instructor. Arno Barlow and Terrick Naude are excellent, and will travel to present classes if the group is big enough. Both have lots of real word SD experience, and it will completely change your perspective as to what you need in a SD handgun

If your looking for a stay at home self defense hand gun a quality high capacity 9mm is what your looking for. If you plan on training a lot with your handgun buy one with an external safety, if not buy a striker fired pistol. If you plan on carrying your hand gun forget the high capacity double stack pistol and buy a quality single stack pistol. The first rule of concealed carry is "Carry a Gun" toting you high capacity 9mm in your purse is not carrying your pistol and is only slightly better than not carrying a gun. The first thing the "Bad Guys" will do is separate you from your purse and now they have your gun. Now that you are carrying a gun you have to be able to shoot it well, the single most important thing to accurately shooting a handgun is the trigger pull, the Glock is a very reliable handgun but their are no words in the English language to describe how bad their trigger pull is. Another consideration is how easy is it to operate the slide, make sure you can easily operate the slide on your handgun, some guns take more grip strength to operate than others. I would recommend two handguns the Walther PPK in .380 (its the gun that James Bond carries) or the Ruger LC9s, both guns are small making them easier for small framed people to grip correctly, concealable and have good triggers.

Many people will disagree with me recommending a 7 shot handgun claiming you need to shoot each attacker multiple times. My reasoning for this is simple, I am no longer a solider and I am not a Law Enforcement Officer or Personal Body Guard, if I am forced to use my firearm in defense of myself or others I will be involved in a shooting not a shootout. Normally the "Bad Guys" flee at the sound of the first gun shot, if they stand and fight your probable in more trouble than your handgun will get you out of. That's my 2 cents, your on the right track looking for a quality handgun, lets us know how your search ends up and welcome to AH.

The rules of safety are the same regardless of the firearm.

If I was going single stack I'd look at a 45acp,
Heres something a little off the wall,,Zastava makes a model M88A it's a small all metal 9mm pistol, single action with a Hammer and a safety,I owned one and they are ultra reliable and they can be bought fairly cheap. just a thought.

Taurus would be wayyyyy down on my list. Glock, SIG, HK, Beretta would all come long before the T. If you like the Glock, and it fits your had, that is what I would pick. Price wise, the SIG P365 and the HK VP9/P30 are probably right close to the Glock, but not sure about pricing where you are at. The Beretta PX4 gets really great reviews too. Another to consider is the Walther PPQ - many dedicated gun guys say it has the best factory trigger available.

Does anyone know if I can buy spare magazines and maybe parts for the TH9? Here in Namibia?

If you can't get any in Namibia I'm certain we can get you some shipped from the states unless there is some kind of law against it

They have a "quasi" safety, it is on the trigger. Essentially, it has to be squeezed so you can squeeze the trigger. It is difficult to explain but if you get a chance to pick one up you will see what I mean.

This is my beef with the Glock. Any gun needs the trigger pulled to fire, which requires a finger on the trigger, which makes Glock's version of a safety no more a safety than a sear in a bent. However, that said, it being a striker-fired pistol a portion of the trigger pull retracts the striker that bit more prior to it being released to fire. In this sense it is a bit like an intercepting safety, such as is common on sidelock rifles and shotguns (which normally possess a regular safety intended to block movement of the sear either directly or indirectly via the triggers, the intercepting a backup to it).

Maybe a revolver would be a good way to go, holds 6 shots comes in calibers from 22 up to hand cannon different barrel lengths from 2'' up to 9" and generally have decent triggers, clean easily, and are more fun to shoot in my opinion

Hi guys!
I am looking for a good self defence weapon, and someone told me about the Taurus TH 9. I am more of a Glock girl, and the reviews on the TH 9 does not look so good. Can I please have your input? Is there anyone who has a Taurus weapon and what is your take on it?
Sorry for the late listing, but one thing to think about is the fit of the gun and the training that is required to use the platform, in our training it is the 1 2 3 the ease of access to the weapon of choice, the g2c form Taurus I have personally put down 2500 rounds no problems at all and I have owned over 45 hand guns in my life time, all are reliable as long as you clean and oil them, even a glock, that I gave my brother, I own a Sig 226 and a Taurus line of fire arms now, and the TH9 is a very good gun, very good I carry a PT809COMBAT that I had imported from Brazil, and it will work when you need it, when it comes down to cost of the unit, you have to look at euro vs dollars for the glock and visa versa for the Brazilian built military and currently used model TH40 and remember they only use 40 S&W in Brazil so all there guns are built up around the 40S&W cartridge, so the guns shoot great, and there are parts available, for you and you only need to ask your self ,what do I need it for, but like every thing in life training of the platform ,and access to the buttons ,and leavers etc, my wife carries a PT640PRO as she can reach all the buttons etc, and we have never had any issues, and Ill say this the only time Ive see any issues on very expensive guns is when some one has used old brass in there reloads, the are good and they dont just break, you just need to see the size of there country and the different areas they have to use these things, and they use them, just from Ozborne in SA, little bit of gun help. G3C would be an ideal gun for men and woman.

Glocks are hard to beat for reliability and simplicity of use (firing, cleaning, takedown, etc.) I have two and both have been 100% reliable. Also purchased recently a CZ 75 BD Compact. It's a bit heavier than the Glocks, but I like the exposed hammer and the decocker.

Another revolver fan here, but she may have been looking for a semi-auto specifically.
