Zimbabwe Political Update

A head of cauliflower at one of our South African owned groceries is Bond or U.S. $86.00.

On a less serious note, I would gladly forego any cauliflower. We should all sacrifice where we can.

Not going to make it any easier for Zim hunters to sell hunts.:(:( I imagine there will some sharp increases in costs for near future hunts to cover some of these wild increases.

I think your right.

If this had to happen, glad it is going down now and not in July...I fly out ~August 12 for Bulawayo.

Might make for an interesting trip report though!

Hunting or business on that trip?

From the Zimbabwe PH’s I spoke to at DSC they are booking like any other year.

We are on the ground here in Milibizi. The govt. cut all communications until yesterday. The country has operated on a dual currency for the last two years. Zimbabwe has been using the "bond" and the U.S. dollar. The bond is supposed to be on par with the U.S. dollar (year right). The price of fuel was raised on the bond. We were paying about B1.35 per litre on diesel and $1.00 U.S. per litre. Now the Bond price has gone up to around B3.50 per litre, but the bond is now trading for about B4.50 to $1.00.

O.K. so much for fuel, the local grocery stores have raised the price of food by somewhere around 12 to 15 times. A head of cauliflower at one of our South African owned groceries is Bond or U.S. $86.00. Dual pricing is not exactly legal so needless to say, not so nice.

Now as to what is taking place. First there was a stayaway and peaceful protests, then not so peaceful protest. The govt. responded shall we say harshly. Of course things turned into riots and as many of you know criminals love riots, it gives them a chance to maim, steel and destroy. At the moment things are very quiet. There are rumours of another stayaway this coming week, who knows. The army has been deployed throughout the country, the exact purpose is unclear.

I certainly cannot speak about August but if you were arriving in Victoria Falls tomorrow you would probably experience three courteous road blocks on the way to our hunting camp. You might hear a bit of sobbing from my tent, that could be because the nice roast beef dinner, with wine and side dishes cost me 50% of what your daily fee cost is, because of course I quoted you your price six months ago. In all seriousness our operating costs have and will continue to skyrocket. We bought goats for baits in 2018 and we paid B15.00 now the people want $80.00 each.

Your Zimbabwe Safari Operator will see that your hunt takes place in a safe and friendly atmosphere.
I really feel for you. I wish I got those prices for beef and goats in the states.....

Sounds good, but some will have to raise prices to compensate for the increases or go bust. Assume you haven't talked to every Zim PH....o_O

There were allot of them there yes. Once you book at an agreed upon price and sign a contract then the price is the price and rising costs must be absorbed by the safari company

I understand that of course. What I mean is for those who have NOT booked, future bookings will probably see some increases due to the taxes, turmoil etc,, above current prices.

Tarbe, you'll just have to hire John Sharp as a Body Guard!!!
Well, he is picking me up at the airport and I don't really plan on letting him out of my sight for the next 12 days!

I didn't know you were hunting with him. That should be a real hoot!:D I am enjoying his book.

And then hope they do not go tits up before any booked hunts...and that you will have food and fuel in camp...

Sad state of affairs indeed.

Let's hope they rather start producing and farming again and it recovers. We always use to call it "God's own country". Went there on our honeymoon 24 years ago.....started my hunting career there 28 years ago, things sure have gone downhill

Oh yeah!

@Bullthrower338 and I are doing 12 days in the BVC with John Sharp and Dave Langerman (Dave is probably John's favorite PH to share camp with).

Both John and Dave bring a lot to the table and Cody and I feel very fortunate to be able to hunt with these gents!

Sounds like a blast! Should have a great time!

I’m having a hell of a time growing my hair out and getting into any kind of shape that would allow shirtless river crossing photos!

Hopefully things improve and safari companies can still make decent profit. Non-profitable businesses are not good for anyone. I'll be hunting in Zimbabwe on March and wish that things are OK by then...

an absolute misery for the people.
Even the dumbest one knows, there's money on a white face.
Little bit more as two years ago, we drove 7 hours from Harare to the hunting camp at the Save River by car.
I wouldn't trust me today, but would take a private jet and land on the airstrip of the hunting area (had fourfold costs at that time).
We camped at the border river and were able to spit directly to Mozambique, to my question, whether it would not be easy for a criminel gang to storm our camp and rob us, one replied to me, "that the camp belonged to the ( lady-) governor of Machinga. An old fighting companion of Mugabe, the fear of the counter-reaction if something happens protects us totally".
Whether this safety cordon is still there today, I dare to doubt.

Zuma RSA (wait two years)
Mugabe Zimbabwe
Mboutu Zaire
Ghadafi Lybia
Saddam Iraq
Mubarak Egypt
and not to speak about South America.

It is to go crazy when a dictator/autocrat is eliminated today, everything becomes even more terrible. Let us seriously wonder about the migrant movements into the western world and how many people will carry this ship before it sinks?
