Williebees says hi!!

Thanks for the all the welcomes.
I just thought, I could make my intro so much shorter: "I like guns and gnus.":)
Gert thank you for the kind words - we are planning our Pioneer hunt for March this year.
Thanks to Gert the forum can look forward to a great crop of photos!

My name is Willie Barnard, and I live in Limpopo province RSA.
My favourite animal is the blue wildebees/ brindled gnu/ streifengnu/ Connochaetus taurinus.
From there my nickname "Williebees"

I love all kinds of hunting, and all kinds of guns.
Looking forward to chat with you guys.

Hello from Kentucky USA
Glad to see you on here as I'm scheduled to hunt in that province the first week of July 2019.. Is that a good time? I understand it's chilly but just how chilly? at night and in the daytime.... I'm currently looking at hunting a blue Wildebeest and a warthog... and am leaning toward having them done in the european (skull) style mounts and having the hides tanned hair off... does this sound doable?
I currently hunt white tail deer and have hunted elk and favor the 30-06 rifle but own a few other calibers. Any advice would be welcome for sure....
] Nice seeing you on here and good hunting to you

Cliff, I once had a chat with a hunter from Minnesota, his words: "I like your so-called winters."
If you strike a really cold spell, the minimum night temperatures may go down to -3*Centigrade, with day temperatures between 16 and 22 *C. July is really the best time of year for a hunt in Limpopo.

Wildebees and Warthog make very nice skull mounts.
The wildebees skin may be convertible to leather, but as far as I know the warthog skin is almost useless.
However the Wildebees skin makes a very nice rug if tanned with the hair on. Wildebees skin is also very resistant to hair slip, unlike kudu and gemsbok.

Williebees, thanks for the reply... Almost anywhere is better than Minnesota winters LOL LOL ...16C would be a perfect temperature.
I was reading last night that the US quarantines any swine skins unless they are flint dried but clean bones, skulls etc are okay so I will stick with the skull mount on the warthog. Something to do with swine fever.
Will rethink my Wildebees skin project....
Planning is always a great passtime..... :)
Have a great day!!!

Welcome aboard Williebees. We all look forward to Gert's annual report of the black powder hunt. It is obvious that everyone in that group enjoys reenacting the adventurers of the voretrekkers (sp).

Welcome Willie, members Willie Barnard( Dr. ) is the person on who`s farm we do our annual 1885 Black Powder Era hunt every year. Willie is extremely knowledgeable on indigenous trees , plants and herbs. He is our medical guru when someone gets ill or hurt during the hunt. I have learned a lot from him and it really is always great to listen to his experience in the field of venomous snakes. He is an expert medical practitioner on the Black Mamba , a deadly snake encountered here is Africa. He is has excellent knowledge in bush craft and survival skills as well.:A Banana::A Big Hello:Willie Barnard is a collector of Boer War rifles as well.Willie Barnard is also the organiser of the Ellisras Shooting festival , this shooting festival is conducted every year on his other farm containing seven different shooting ranges. It really is one of the biggest shooting festivals in South Africa...
Hi Willie. welcome. Maybe you can share some fcats and stories about the Black Mamba. I once read a piece of a medical practioner treating a hunter on a black mamba bite in Limpopo. - it could have been you -
