Unexpected great news!!

We went to the doctor today and as expected they advised not going. I’d love to go, and will probably regret it because I’d guess it’ll be a few years before another opportunity comes up, but I don’t know how comfortable I am to go on a trip and leave my wife home. She was looking forward to this as well and I just wouldn’t feel right I don’t think.
I didn’t feel right about it either, got over it pretty quickly after I got off the plane in Kimberly though! Might have added to the eventual divorce but there is only one first trip! I will always have that. Lol

I don't have any advice for you but congrats on the other news!! :) I hope to see my first grandchild this coming July and I look forward to that.:D

I would see if the outfitter can postpone you for a year. I am not a Physician, but I would not let my wife be taking Malaria medication while pregnant, even if the Physician said it was safe.
I agree. I would either not go or go further south in July or August when there are fewer insects. Tough call.

I think that I would postpone the trip and take the money that you would of spent and place it into a college savings account for the kid. This would equal to major man points with the Mrs.

Mind you this is all being said without knowing your financial situation.

Congratulations!!!! (y)

Congrats!!

congratulations!!! kiddos trump Africa every day of the week. Go or no go is you'r call
but at my house if MAMA aint happy, nobody happy. LMAO!
my wife is really easy going.:D Cheers:

Thank you all very much for the advice. One thing I’d like to mention, even though I have not hunted with them, I know that I will be choosing Wild Wildebeest Safaris when I am able to go in the future. Tonie (owner) and Steve (US rep) could not have been more understanding or helpful. Both were very understanding and told me to do exactly what the doctors say, and do not risk it. Tonie was very flexible on options going forward, which we are still processing lol. I’ll go ahead and admit it was a bit nerving going to hunt on another continent, not knowing what to expect. It’s pretty obvious that there are great people everywhere though.
I understand the “go for it” advice. I just don’t think I would feel right though. My wife was very much looking forward to this trip as well. She is sacrificing an Africa trip, plus she has to carry our baby for 9 months, not to mention what a woman’s body goes through. It is a very hard thing to do, but I can give up a trip for now for the safety of her and our child.
Thank you all again very much for the advice! I probably need to knock off a few of my bucket list hunts that are driving distance from me anyways for the next year or two. Anyone know much about DIY black bear hunts in Montana?

Well done!

Obviously you’re going to make a good father and husband! Good decision IMO!

Congratulations. That is the best news, and really the only news that matters. Let the rest play out and don't try to force anything. The only reason you needed to ask is because this is your first. About 30 seconds after your child arrives you will get it.

My son and I are working on one for Idaho next fall. Actually it will be an elk/mule deer hunt, but we are allowed to use the deer tag on a bear, wolf, or lion if the opportunity presents. We will be in thick bear country. I know bait and dogs are legal and out of state tags are $40.00. I also know there are a crap ton of them.

I would trust your gut on this one.

Nice! I will have to look into that. My dad wants to elk hunt Idaho. I was thinking Montana just for the fact that it’s probably a little closer to me here in Iowa and they have over the counter tags. We also bought a baited bear hunt in Minnesota this weekend, but I’d like to spot and stalk rather than bait. That’s the backup plan in case I’m not successful lol.

I started looking at Montana and switched over to Idaho and I really do not remember why. The whole process is so convoluted. It might be because we could basically have an elk, mule deer, whitetail, bear, wold, or lion hunt. I know running up on a lion is unlikely, but bears are a plenty. You can bait, and are encouraged to shoot the wolves off the bait.

Thanks John, I’ll look into that.

Don't don't don't. Africa will be there. Ya, it's a hard pill to swallow, but if you don't want to be paying child support before baby is born, stay home!

Haha trip is cancelled. We’re going to take a week and hit the black hills and Yellowstone instead. It will be a nice constellation prize.....

Just to stir the pot a bit, but some friends went to hunt Idaho because they could get tags for a lot of game. I believe it was near the Montana border in the Bitterroot Mountains. After horse packing in for 10 days, they all came home empty handed. Never saw any game. After reading up more on it, the wolf population had devastated the deer and elk. This was maybe 5 years ago, so the populations may have come back.
