Hello everyone,
My wife and I have received some great news. We are expecting an additional to our family in August. It will be our first human child, we have two dogs. We are beyond excited but are anticipating our OGBYN visit tomorrow because we have a safari planned for April. We are fully expecting bad news on the safari front. We are going to Limpopo, and according to the map Zika is not an issue there, just malaria. Does anyone by chance have any experience with this or have heard anything about it before? I contacted our US rep for our hunt, he said to do as the doctor says. It was actually very reassuring to know that they care about our and our baby’s well being. Thanks everyone!

CONGRATULATIONS on your good news!

Don't think that Doc is about to be prescribing any Anti-malarials.

Malarone
  • Cannot be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding a child less than 5 kg
Doxycycline
  • Cannot be used by pregnant women and children <8 years old
Primaquine
  • Cannot be used by pregnant women

Great news and congrats! Reschedule your safari for next year and spend the time creating the perfect room for the new baby.

Congratulations!

Wow, awesome news, congrats!

Congrats. I didn’t think Malaria was in Limpopo, but could be wrong. I’m sure someone on here can verify.

Very much in Limpopo. I contracted malaria last year on our trip. Not something to be messed with.

Congrats to both you and the misses!

First of all: Congratulations! That is wonderful news! Second off: I'd go with what the folks here have said and postpone your trip. I did a little digging and I came across this: "A one week pack contains enough chloroquine tablets for a week (adult dose two tablets once weekly) and enough proguanil tablets for a week (adult dose – two tablets once daily). For children over 1 year of age, the dose depends on the child's age." So to me that says if the child is under 1 year old maybe Malaria pills are not recommended, or in other words you might have to postpone for 2 years rather than just one. Safety first and all that. But even if you do end up postponing so what? Africa has been around at least a couple of years, I'm sure it will be there when your ready to go with your kiddo!

Bra-VO!!!!

Thank you all very much. We were assuming it would be a no go for now and we will have to make other arrangements. I’m sure Africa will be there for a while yet haha.

Great!

Congratulations. Whatever you are thinking, do NOT go to Africa with a buddy as a fill in and leave your wife home. Malaria will be the least of your problems, you could be highly susceptible to HIDS. :S Dollar:

Buy your wife something nice and go on your hunt! After a child is born there will be a million reasons not to go!

We went to the doctor today and as expected they advised not going. I’d love to go, and will probably regret it because I’d guess it’ll be a few years before another opportunity comes up, but I don’t know how comfortable I am to go on a trip and leave my wife home. She was looking forward to this as well and I just wouldn’t feel right I don’t think.
