It is essentially the .375 H&H blown out straight and loaded with bullets originally designed for the .470 NE.
The Capstick cartridge is supposedly capable of driving its 500 gr bullets to about 2400 fps.
The A-Square loading manual, "Any Shot You Want" describes it as the largest bore possible when using the .375 H&H cartridge as the parent case.
That book also mentions the complete lengthwise penetration and exit on a buffalo, while firing a monolithic solid from this cartridge.
Personally, I have no use for wild cat cartridges, because none of them within my recoil tolerance, can do anything that, some well established factory available cartridge does not do at least as well already.

Harrison, a heads up in case you might be looking at a Winchester in this caliber.
Winchester did a limited run in .470 Capstick quite a few years back, and the few that I am aware of came out with oversized bores that do not properly stablize the .474 bullets, therefore if looking at a used Winchester in this caliber make sure to slug the bore first before committing.

I whole-heartedly concur with Spike's suggestion; get a .458Lott instead !

im with spike.t, the 458 Lott is a much more practical cartridge and it will do anything a 470 Capstick will do. if reload you will have a much better selection/availability with .458" bullets. if you don't reload then 470 Capstick is pretty much out since the factory ammunition selection is almost non-existent.

Ok, so I have a question about the preference for the Lott over the Capstick. Is this preference due only to the ability to use a wide range of bullets? When I look at the design of the Capstick it strikes me as the better cartridge - more surface area, greater potential for velocity, ghost shoulder seems like a sound concept. There are actually plenty of bullets available for it. So, for handloading isn't the Capstick the "better" cartridge?

"Better" is a subjective term. Is the Captsick more powerful and will it hit harder? Yeah, a bit. As others have said, though, it's a rare duck whereas the Lott is becoming as common as dirt. In the field nothing you hit will notice which of the two you you're carrying.

The A-Square Hannibal rifle in .470 Capstick.....

…. deliveres significantly more punch than a .470 Nitro Express.

Nice looking rifle. Cabela's had one on the rack a few years ago, a trade-in. They were only asking $1,700 and it was in .470 Capstick as well. Had I the money then I would've bought.

It is a grand thing indeed to find such a giant Slayer in perfect condition that came out of the factory that way for cheap...........Or is it?

Some years back I stood there in awe as I hefted the A square chambered in the absolutely nuclear bomb powerful T-Rex round envisioning in my mind's eye dropping the biggest elephant ever ever recorded. And this baby came loaded. Scope , sling, case, 200 loaded rounds, 200 new case, bullets out the wazoo, dies...

And though the price was rediculously low......to the point of me almost believing it had to be stolen, the woodbe seller becoming giddy at the prospect of finally getting rid of this rock around his neck let loose with this fatal collection of words, " I never though I was ever gonna get rid of it", which made me say, "well, I'll think about it and get back to you", as I never said that I was going to buy it.

He quit smiling and started throwing figures about til finally I said that I would start putting money on his table and when I stopped dropping if he picked it up fine, if I picked the money up it was adios forever and he could keep his rifle.

I stopped dropping money and he dove on it.

He smiled and then told me how he has been selling it for almost 10 years and no one wanted it.

Now! If someone wanted to drop the bad mouth on a round about recoil this would be the one. It throws a 750 grain fmj at 2500 fps + which makes the recoil of the 460 a joke.

If you wanted to buy just one round they are on sale on the internet for $39.95@ plus shipping, and when you reload them you don't buy powder by the pound, but by the keg.

And everyone who sees it wants to handle it and rub their bad luck deep into the pores of the wood and make comment on how heavy it is, with some pontificating to his fellow onlookers how stupidly overpowered the round is, though he himself is the .17 rimfire champion of the 5 moa 100 yard sharp shooters off a machine rest.

So " CT"....there's a reason why that beautiful rifle you saw at Cabela's was going for $1,400 bucks when it originally went for many times that amount. Cabela's either took it in as trade or bought it outright used from a customer for between 4 to 6 hundred dollars knowing that even with a national chain it's gonna sit for a while. The T-Rex , though exciting all by itself would take even longer to sell if you don't have the correct outlet where people who desire such artilary congregate.

The 470 is a fine round, but doesn't get the play it deserves because the firearms industry isn't yet ready to exploit it.

They will never be ready to exploit the T-Rex. :A Stars:

The T-Rex is a unicorn, not comparable to the Capstick.

Capstick rifles are easy to built, and components are easy to come by.

Reloading dies are readily available, Hornady makes bullets and I got my cases from Horneber within three weeks.

And it is fun to shoot!!!

Unfortunatelly Winchester made a limited run of M70 rifles, but these were scrap, not worth to think about any longer.

Today, a good gunsmith and a Enfield P-17 action are the ingredients to start with.

If it where me, and I was looking for a cartridge in that range, with loads of potential get a 450 Rigby otherwise the 458 Lott...

I am curious why the Lott (same basic case is why I focused on this one). Is it the bullet, and the preferred double is a 450 over a 470 NE? Or is it something else about the cartridge.

Let’s face it anything that is 45 cal or larger that can chuck a 500 gr or better bullet at 2150/2200 will get the job done. If it does not then there is nothing out there that will.
As always with the above combo of some sort it is up the shooter.

I'm in the process of building a 470 Capstick. I recently purchased 3 Winchester 1917 Enfield actions for my gunsmith to evaluate for the build. Total investment through Gunbroker was around $320 for all three! (Inc. S&H) Note: They are in varying grades of poor and I will require metallurgical testing for soundness.

Right now I'm currently evaluating barrel manufacturers for this build and I've reached a sticking point. Most bullet manufacturers list this as either a .474 or .475 bullet which is throwing off my barrel selection as Krieger makes a .475 barrel but almost all bullet manufacturers list this as .474 bullet. The .475 bullets listed are for pistol calibers. A quick search of the internet and "Any Shot You Want" adds to the confusion. I will need to place a few phone calls during business hours this week.

@HCL Would you post more pictures of your rifle and weigh in on my bullet/barrel question as I see you reload. Thanks!

Please let us know whether you settle on .474 or not. I think that is correct

Will do Pheroze! I'm anticipating the build to go at least 6-8 months. I have an extremely talented master gunsmith who will be leading the project. Once I clarify the bullet/barrel decision this week with Speer and Krieger, I'll be able to finalize some of the build decisions. My next challenge will be clearing the actions for build via visual inspection and Magnaflux Magnetic Particle Testing. After that I'll order a the barrel for the build. Personal note: I'll be running a 458 Lott as a parallel build along side of the 470 Capstick. Just in case sh*t happens along the way.
