I’ve got a Savage 99 in .300 Savage built in the 30’s. There’s a bit of family history around the 99 in that caliber, and I’d like to mount it with a fixed scope from the 50’s or 60’s. Basically, I’m trying to recreate what my Grandfather would have hunted deer with in PA from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. I have the correct rifle, but sadly I never found out what kind of optic he used.

Weaver K4 or Lyman All American - both easily found on Ebay. If your Savage is not already drilled and tapped, you may want to think about it. Nice ones, with the rotary magazine, brass counter, and slim profile walnut stocks in original condition are starting to gain some collector traction.

@redleg - thank you for the advice. My 99 is already drilled and tapped. I’d rate the gun overall at about 90%, maybe better. It’s a nice gun, but not a collectors item.

Then find a pristine K4 and go shoot a deer with your grandfather's spirit. (y)

You could also look for one of the new steel tube Weaver Classic 4x scopes made in recent years. The K designation was abandoned when the magnifications were increased, after 50 odd years. The Weaver K4 had a 3.7x magnification right up till it was replaced, in the early 2000s, by the Weaver Classic 4x with a true 4x magnification (with ocular set at manufactory test position). NB Magnification varies slightly as the ocular is adjusted to suit your vision.
The recent steel tube models look good, are obviously steel and another guy on our club committee put one on to a very nice 1950s Husqvarna.

Dittos on the old weaver K 4(s). The good ones everybody mentions were made in El Paso Texas. If you're looking at a weaver and it doesn't say El Paso, give it a wide berth. Do you know for a fact that your grandfather's rifle had a scope on it? Most often lever guns went into the woods wearing iron sights. Mine still do.

I have a steel tube Weaver K4 I had mounted on a M70 30-06 for 30 years. I replaced it with a 3x9 in 2014. I have never offered it up for sale, but if you are interested, PM me.

He had iron sights on it initially, but put a scope on it when he took it elk hunting in CO.

I am backtracking...what I have is not a K4....sorry about that guys!

Mine has a lyman alaskan with griffin &howe removable mount

there were several good optics from the 1950s: Bushnell ScopeChiefs, Bausch & Lomb Balvars, Lyman All Americans, Leupold Pioneer and Mountaineers, Kollmorgen & Redfield BearCubs just to name a few.

A nice touch can be a set of Weaver pivot mounts on the K4 or K6 to allow use of your iron sights

Dittos on the Weaver Tip off Mounts. They have been in use on my Remington 742 since the early eighties. I'm happy to say that it still shoots MOA groups with my handloads. This one sports an old Redfield Wide Angle 2-7 that was installed when the rifle was purchased.

Had a K 2.5 on a 99 back in the late 50s and a K4 on a m70 in 30-06. Shot woodchucks with a 222 and a K-6. Good scopes in those days.

I used to have one as described. Very nice rifle. Shot a few moose with it. Why did I get rid of it??

Looking at this one on EBay. Still has original box and papers, but if it isn’t stamped ‘El Paso’ it’s not made in El Paso, correct? Seller is adamant it is a Texas scope but I’m not so sure. He is asking a premium that seems warranted only if it is an El Paso scope.

My Dad had a 4X Bausch and Lomb on his 99

Update: found a mint, NIB Weaver K4 (circa 1956 to 1960) from a reputable dealer. It’s on its way from Montana. Thanks for all advice.
