If you have rechambered a rifle in a standard action length belted magnum (.264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, etc) to a Ruger Magnun how much work did it take to make it feed correctly?

I have a Howa 1500 in .338 Win Mag I picked up in unfired condition for a stupid low price and I'm tempted to get the barrel rebored and rechambered in .416 Ruger.

I believe this would fit better in .375 & Up.
It's not receiving much attention here.

Admin please delete if you would and I will repost in .375 & Up.

I think part of the lack of responses is simply that I don't think many people have done it. I don't mean to discourage you, but I just think if you shop for a used rifle in this caliber, you may find you'll spend the same amount of money maybe a bit more than if you do this conversion.

I was going to have a Ruger 77 stainless in 338 win rebored to 416 then I found a 416 hawkeye on gunbroker for $620 . Look just like the African without the brake

On the Alaskan shooters forum there were a few that had 358 Norma Mag's rechambered for the 375 Ruger case. There was some 338 Win. Mags that were also made into 375/338. They never seemed to have much feeding problems.

I rebarreled a Win 70 CRF action to a 9.3-375 Ruger and didn't modify anything. It feeds fine. Have 7mm-375 Ruger on a Rem 700 action and didn't modify anything on it either. Feeds fine.

375 Ruger is a great case for the wildcaters. It also is better for the reloader. Hornady may have better off just necking it down to 338 and 300 instead of the RCM's.

I believe the new 300 PRC by Hornady is based off the 375 Ruger

Yes they did neck the 375 Ruger down to 30 Cal. I wonder if Ruger will chamber it in the 77? I think it for long range shooting.

A friend of mine recently re-barreled a Ruger M77 in .338 win mag to .375 Ruger without any feeding issues. It feed the .375 Ruger with ease and no did not require any additional modifications. I would think that the Howa would be the same.

Regarding re-boring the existing barrel. This may not be possible due to the lack of metal towards the muzzle of the barrel. My own .416 has a muzzle diameter of .700" and I regard this as having a thin wall thickness between the bore and the outside of the muzzle - This is 0.142" (3.6mm) per side.
I would suggest you measure the muzzle diameter and see if it can be bored out leaving sufficient wall thickness between the new bore and existing muzzle. I think that a 0.118" (3mm) wall thickness per side would be a safe minimum for a .416.
