Inspired by another Texas free range thread.

I have made 1 trip to Africa, I have hunted South Texas free range Nilgai on multiple occasions.

If you want a very similar experience to hunting Africa and pursuing a tough, elusive, and intelligent animal at an inexpensive cost, it is a Nilgai!

Our outfitter requires a minimum of a 300 win mag to hunt and be ready to walk.

Nilgai meat is incredible! With the quality of the meat, the quality of the hunt.....if the animal had tall horns, the Nilgai would be very expensive!

Will be on King Ranch in two weeks to give it a try. Using my .318 Westley Richards.

I've definitely got to get this done in the next couple of years now that I'm back in Texas.

What outfitter did you use?

I have gone whitetail hunting twice in south Texas and yet to take a whitetail. But I have taken two Nilgai and as the OP stated, it is similar hunting to Africa and Nilgai meat is incredible and you will fill a freezer.

First Nilgai in 2009

Second Nilgai was taken in Dec 2011 and I ended up mounting this one as I was told it was a really good one, something like 9-1/8" as I recall.

Lomas Chicas Outfitters, Hunting the Kennedy Ranch near Sarita. We hunt in March, but outfitter indicates one the best times is October/November. Easy “cast and blast” option as the hunting grounds are near Baffin Bay.

Sam is a great guy and the Kennedy Ranch is unbelievable. If you get ready to go after Nilgai, let me know, my Rigby is getting impatient with me.

That sounds like a great hunt with some excellent meat! My kind of hunting!

@Buff-Buster ,

I didn't get an elk in two trips this fall, so.... I have an empty freezer.

Either a Nilgai or one of those fighting bulls may just be in order.

This is a hunt I want to do some day!

Nilgai are a fun hunt and great for the table. I’ve shot quite a few of them, I think they are tough but not near the mythical status hunters think about them. It’s a great spot and stalk hunt. If you are chasing them through the pasture in a truck you are wasting your time.

Agree, great spot and stalk (or stalk). Personally, I do not wish to chase a Nilgai or any other game from a Jeep.

I have seen a bull take a great shot from a 375 at 75 yards and subsequently, “drop, roll over to legs up”.

As high fives were being exchanged, the bull got up to make a very valid attempt to escape the area.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
