Double rifle in .405 Winchester

Is there a name for the metal fixture on the recoil pad or it all custom made?

There is this german company that makes this detachable recoil pads.

Unfortunately, the installation instructions are in German only.

Once mounted, you have to cut out the central part of the metal rail and to drill the holes for the cartridges....

I love this, because you always have some extra ammunition, nobudy knows...

Very good instructions and illustrations- thank you.
I skimmed over the German language instructions and some of my college German came back to me. If needed, I could break out my German/English dictionary (still have it) and translate.
I also have hunting friend that is fluent in the language .
I will save the link to show to W. Ellis Brown October 5 when I meet him at the last day of his course on Building Double Rifles On Shotgun Actions that he is teaching at a gunsmith school the first week of October; he may be familiar with the product.

Ellis will be having a" show and tell" session before he lets the class shoot a few of his double rifles that he has made. I am to demo my Hynden-made .405 and .45-70 doubles also.
The following day, Ellis will join me at the Boars Nest for some shooting double rifles at game rather than paper targets. Should be fun! If we take some good pix, I will post them here.

BTW, I just read your footnote about relying on Mauser M98 and thought maybe I should add something like that about my Pre 64 Winchester M70 Featherweight.
:)

HWL,
Take a look at the NECG "Quick-Lok" Pad Mechanism on the NECG web site.
Lots of familiar parts there.

I have seen, he made doubles from CZ shotguns.

Please ask Ellis, what he thinks is better, a CZ 12 ga or a 16 ga SxS

I have both and think about to slaughter one for building a .450/400 NE 3"

HWL

Will do.

FYI:
The rifle on the cover to V2 of his How To book is a 450 NE built on a 16 ga action and is a beauty, but he says in the book that next time he does a 450 NE, it will be on a 12 ga frame to better control the recoil.
That statement plus my experience shooting 400 grain ammo in my 12 ga based, ten pound .405 double leads me to believe that a 16 ga will make a sweet 450/400 double. Just right for the cartridge.
Let's see what Ellis says.

BTW, his soft back book is very interesting , even to a gun nut that is not a gun smith, and at $54 from the publisher, is a bargain.

Even works with a shotgun shell...

Indeed it does.
Which gun butt are we observing?

This is a Drilling, Sauer & Sohn Mod. 3000, cal. 5,6x52 R, (aka. .22 Savage Hi Power) 16/70, 16/70, with Swaro 3,9x36 on claws.

@crs I am going to send you a PM.

Since you are meeting with Ellis I have several questions I would love to have you ask him about a possible project for me if you don't mind?

HWL - nice gun! Thank you for the picture.
What game have you taken with that beauty?

AZDAVE - PM sent.

Nothing yet...

I bought it, and made it ready for action, now it is.

Yesterday, I was at the range, zeroed it at 100 m and had some test shot at 200 m and 250 m.

Drillings, as well as the 5,6x52R and the 16 ga. shotgun are not common any longer in the german hunting scene.

The 5,6x52R is legal only for the little reh deer, but not for anything bigger.

Today, pigs are everywhere, and the little 5,6x52R against a big pig is like a 3,7cm PAK against a T34.

Even wolves have a problem....

Made by Jules Bury in 1930; short LOP, light (just under 7 lbs) and barrel heavy which insured survival in pristine condition. Now with a leather covered recoil pad for my LOP and a little over a pound of Tungsten in the butt stock for perfect balance and recoil moderation we are friends for life.

WHAT IS THE VALUE ON THE OLD .405 DUBBLE IN GOOD CONDITION

All this reading on the merits of hunting with the .405, makes me want to take my old girl out of the safe and head back up to the Territory on shoot another couple of them.

Nice game and rifle. Looks like you rolled yours in the fall leaves.

Two Australian friends, Peter and Jake, came to the US and bought M95 .405 WCF rifles and went hunting with us in Texas. WE had a great time and they shot a lot of critters. They have been back a time or two also.
They also took their .405 rifles up to your north coast and took some buff and Bantang. Great guys and good hunters.

My .405 double is going to south Texas for exotics next week and I will report if successful.

South Texas hunt was good for the boys and all three scored. Two whitetail bucks and one doe. The adults were rained out. Way too much rain made mud to even get onto the ranch where we were to hunt axis deer.
Oh well, another time as there are no seasons on exotics in Texas.

HWL,
Congratulations on your purchase. The 405 is my favorite caliber. I have a Win 1895 lever and a Ruger No.1 both in 405 and I'm seeking my first 405 double rifle.

I am not a reloader and simply shoot Hornady 300gr box ammo. As far as recoil goes all I have to do is think about my Sako 375 H&H with a 19inch barrel and Mannlicher stock. It weighed 7lbs 10oz on a digital postal scale. I can only shoot 3round groups 3 times for a total of 9 rounds fired. Recoil is really tough.
By comparison my Ruger and 1895 405s I can shoot 4round groups 4 times for 16 rounds fired and it is more like a shove than a punch. I'm almost 6ft4in, 185 pounds, basketball player build and a senior citizen. So I'm not the best at handling recoil but like I mentioned, the recoil on the 405 is pretty smooth and consistent.

Best of luck with that double!
