7x57 manufacturers

You are going to like it! 160 and 175 gr Swift A-Frames are incredible in the 7x57. Penetration has to be seen to be believed. Last year quartering frontal shots on zebra and wildebeest exited and produced very quick one shot kills with a 175 gr A-Frame.
I really tossed back and forward on what to use but in the end settled for 150gn ttsx.

Still wondering what to do with open sights, i think it may have been you that has the the qr scope rings and ghost ring? Been having trouble finding it.

I use the NECG peep sight that fits in the Weaver Style Leupold bases for the QRW scope mounts. I'm not sure if this is the base you are using. NECG has multiple options for different base systems. They are very good quality sights. Their website is NECG.com. The model that fits the QRW base actually lists as being intended for the Weaver bases. The QRW system uses the same base design as the Weavers.

Alternatively, Weaver makes a good line of ghost ring sights. I have an island mounted Weaver ghost ring on the barrel of my .375. It is quite good.

The advantage of a barrel mount is that the sight is ready to go as soon as you take the scope off. The advantage of the base (receiver) mounted sight is a longer sighting plane (more accurate) and a rear sight closer to your eye which is easier to blur out than the barrel mounted sight. (ghost rings are different than express sights, you don't actually try to center the bead in the ring, you blur it out by focusing only on the target and the front bead and your eye automatically centers it for you. It's becoming a bit of a lost skill.) The disadvantage of this sight is that you have to have a secure place to carry it with you when the scope is mounted. Mine is in a secure pouch on my stalking belt.

If you want to go with Talley bases and rings, Talley makes a good ghost ring to fit their base. The disadvantage is that it is not elevation adjustable so you have to change front beads until you get the desired point of impact.

Let me know if you still have trouble finding what you are looking for and I will send you the link to the sight you are after.

My daughter and I went to the range yesterday with the new Win M70 to give it a try. I mounted a Leupold VX3 2.5x8x36mm scope on it with Talley lightweight rings. This was a first time to try these rings and I think I really like the design with the integrated base. Just wish Tally had some instructions with the rings. A quick phone call to the Talley customer service cleared up my problem. Got the scope mounted and a simple bore sighting. Shot the rifle a few times at 25 yards and was just a little high and to the right. Made a few clicks of adjustment and moved to the 100 yard range.

The first pleasant surprise was the magazine holds 5 rounds!

I shot a box of Sellier & Bellot 173 gr spire points and groupings were not good, but we were making adjustments and cleaning the barrel every couple of shots. Very little copper fouling was noticeable. The recoil is nothing on this rifle and everything worked great. Closing the bolt was a little stiff, but put a little dab of grease on the flats of the bolt and it gradually got better. After about 30 rounds, we called it a day since the heat index was around 100 F.

I went back to the range early this morning to beat the heat and test some different ammo.

Target #2, above, is with Norma 156 gr Oryx.

The last group worth mentioning is the Sellier & Bellot 140 gr FMJ. A pretty nice 5 shot group. Doubt if I'll shoot these at anything, but at $19/box the S&B ammo is good for range work.

I want to try a few Hornady bullets and also some Swift A-Frames next. All in all, very happy with the rifle.
Check the throat on your rifle. I have the same rifle and was surprised to see a very long throat. I was struggling with accuracy until I figured this out. I am mounting my bullets well out beyond the max loa for the cartridge to reduce the jump to the rifling. The magazine and feeding system work fine going this route. My first three shots with 175 gr. A-Frames once I made this adjustment were in one hole. These rifles were a limited run for a distributor in the NE. It made me wonder if the fellow was a Bell fan and was setting rifles up for the long bullets. Who knows, perhaps he fancies himself and elephant hunter...

JP, I just went back in the thread and found where you mentioned that you are going with a CZ. Great choice! I'm shooting mostly Model 70's but I think the CZ is one of the best rifles on the market. Anyway, the NECG sight is offered in a configuration to fit the CZ receiver. Go to NECG.com. If you have any trouble finding it let me know and I will dig it out for you.

I second the motion for NECG. I have one on my 9.3x62. Works great.

G'day guys,

Just a conclusion to this topic, my new rifle is finally on its way home.

I ended up using a cz 550 as the donor rifle, for the sights I did not get necg, as I'm planning on replacing them down the track with two folding leaf sights but for the time being these should suit.

I ordered in some 156gn norma oryx projectiles and will work up some loads next week.

Have a hunt where ranges could stretch to 450 yards next month and given the poor bc of the oryx I was thinking of buying some factory hornady 139gn SST to use there.

Eventually I plan on sighting in the open sights to oryx for bush hunting and having qr rings attached to a scope with a different load for longer range shooting. Undecided on the practicality of that though.

Will use my vx3 4.5-14x40 on top for the time being, might change to something else one day.

Also, stamped 275 Rigby...of course

looking forward to a range report on that.

Will do, thinking it will like the heavier 156gn pills

On this, I'm curious on loading for the norma oryx and as I wrote an email to norma about 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything back I'll ask here.

In peoples experience of the oryx, what is the effective range of this projectile? I feel like a 400m (~450yd) shot is beyond it. My thinking is 300m will pull them up in terms of bc and wind drift.

Granted the vast majority of my hunting is under 300m, for mountain hunting these ranges do stretch out though.

Fine looking rifle JP and in a most excellent chambering.;)

Never shot norma bullets, but I'm with you. I think they're tailor made for hunting the woodlands of Sweden or African brush, not so much for open country. All the field reports say it opens like a mofo. I'm planning on a 7x57 this spring, and I'm thinking about Scirocco 150, A-Frame 160, Weldcore 160 PP, or NAB 160

@Sandrat loads that 156 for his 7X57, I believe. You have a dandy rifle there shooter. Here's hoping that you have many enjoyable years with your new rifle. Oh, by the way, NECG will probably still be your go to source for folding leaf sights in the future.

Yes I certainly plan on using the necg folding leaf sight.

I have spoken to sand rat about his load, 46gn 4350/2209 hasn't been chronied though. I'm going to load up some with 44, 45 and 46gn tonight.

Love the 156 Oryx but the 139 SST is the most accurate. I'll check my notes when I'm back home in a couple of weeks. I think it's 49 gr of H4350 and it shoots sub MOA with the Hornady pill.

I was contemplating an interlock or maybe nosler accubond, in Australia our biggest limitation is availability.

Lets set a couple of beliefs I have that you may or may not agree with:

-Guns made 30-80 years ago are by far better made with better materials, particularly Mauser style actions.

-The world is awash in a sea of 7x57 / 7mm Mauser rifles of many wonderful manufacturers.

-Used rifles are almost never sold because they are inaccurate in some way.

-A used rifle is usually sold for about 1/4 to 1/5 of the replacement value to have the gun made today.

In light of all of that, $800-$1500 would get you an extraordinary Mauser actioned 7x57 made by the best hands that ever made rifles if you do some searching. Why buy a replica or counterfeit that is soulless, no where near the fit and finish, and plummets in value if you want to sell it when there are so many amazing options in the wild for you to pick from?
Ok men I know that this is kind of late but for those of you that may be interested in building your own special "Highland Stalker" in 275 Rigby, I have some news. Old Western Scrounger (OWS) has a large supply of 1916 Mausers in 7X57. These rifles have hand selected barrelled actions and the rest of the parts to assemble a fine rifle. These are not completed guns, no stocks. They start out at $59.95. Yes $59.95. They even have quantity discounts. Now I have fooled around with a number of Mausers, but have only finished one. I have no first hand knowledge oh the 1916 but that's up to you to find out. Here is the address: OWS-AMMO.COM and the phone # 304-274-0004. This company is owned by Val Forgett. Anyone who has a history with firearms will recognize it. Good luck and good shooting

I think that you have to remember that while the SST is an excellent choice, it will perform just like the Nosler Ballistic Tip. Nothing more accurate, but for big heavy game, my choice would be the 156gr Oryx. This is not a long distance caliber but I think out to 300 meters your spot on.

Gday all,

Looking for some suggestions on 7x57 manufacturers, I'm having a nightmare trying to pin some down. Preferably with open sights.

So far this is what I've got for the Aussie market:

Winchester discontinued it
Cz discontinued it
Schultz & larsen are up to a 12 month wait

So far I know that

Roessler do one in titan 6, just bot mad on alloy actions and the plastic around the magazine and trigger guard.

Heym sr21 do one too but read mixed things about them.

Anyone know of any other manufacturers to consider within this general price range?

I guess the other option is rebarrelling something.

Cheers
Just so you know- Montana can make the 7x57 in our ASR of ALR
Give me a snout if you want to order one and Ill take care of you

Your info is well taken. However, I for one would not be inclined to purchase a 6.5X55 Swede, 6.5X.284 Norma, or a 7X57 to name a few with a true short action. Just one example, there is 0.245 from the C.O.A.L of the .260 Rem. To the 7X57. Why in the world would I want to give up a 1/4 inch of case capacity? And a6.5X.284 built on a short action cannot be a "Norma" the industry built that 6.5X.284 Norma on a long action to specifically take advantage of the longer action to take advantage of the case capacity. I have heard that Ultra Light Rifles have tried but I haven't heard or read anything positive. Certain calibers have always been loaded for long actions. Some where someone is saying, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it". No intent to insult you, just stating my specific needs and I am thinking about a 6.5X.284. A Winchester Classic Sporter in .270 will soon be wearing a .275 Rigby barrel by E.R. Shaw. Obviously my .270 is a long action.
