Best rifle maker in the world

Who do you think is the best rifle builders in the world at present?

My picks are:

Hartmann & Weiss
Purdey
Westley Richards
Grulla armas
Boss & co
Holland & Holland

Who have I left out or don't know about?
 
I'd argue that some of the best rifle makers in the world today are one-man shops, rather than the big names. An example is Ralf Martini, who works out of his shop in British Columbia. Superb rifles which I would put up against any of the famous names.

Ralf Martini is a famous name Hank... for a lot of us. I discovered him 3 or 4 years ago and wished on his web site many times. Would like to own a couple of them....but don't think that's going to happen in this life!
 
How do you define best? Is it in the beauty of the rifle? Or, is it measured by function and utility? What is the intended use of the rifle (although for purposes of this discussion on this forum, that may be obvious), because the best rifle for long range match shooting isn’t the same as for dangerous game.

Agree with you. I am pretty sure most of the readers on this forum lean toward middle to big bore hunting rifles and not the 1000 yard shooter. I imagine they have their own forums for those.

I don't know about what I would call the best "premium" rifles. They're out of my pay grade but I agree with Hank2211. The best rifles in the world are made in one man shops, smiths who dial in the bore of a barrel to be chambered to .0001", clock the bore's muzzle to 12 o'clock and can shoot 1/2 moa out to 1000 yards with precision. There are more than a few in the U.S. that are skilled craftsmen able to do produce these rifles. The wait times are sometimes measured in years.

As has been said how do you define best?

I've no interest in anything pretentious, as soon as you're paying for a name and not functionality best is a meaningless point to me.

The most expensive purdey
or rigby isn't going to outshoot a $600 howa.

If you're talking about craftsmanship and aesthetics then it's as subjective as art.
 
Amazingly factory made rifles these days are much better tolerance wise then they have ever been before because of computer control technology and precision ground tooling.

Ya still can't teach handwork to most people or as of yet...a machine.

Buy a Winchester and don't look back.

I agree, some of the small custom shops are producing superb rifles. Check out Canyon Creek. LeRoy’s work is top drawer.
 
OK. By best let make it easier and say a "London Best" type of rifle.

Its the rifle maker you would go to if time and money weren't an obstacle.

I am talking about a gun that my great grandchildren will still be able to shoot and one that would be just as well made than as now. (so no Howa even though it is a great gun I doubt it going to hold up after 80 years)

a Maker that not only makes beautiful rifles but functional and accurate guns as well.

Here I would put Ralph Martini on my list as well don't know how i forgot him, He makes classically beautiful guns that are as accurate as any.
 
Define "maker"...
For instance Rigby uses barreled actions from Mauser, so who is the maker?

I would say the best maker is the one who builds the rifle you want, exactlg like you want it. Bee it a classic british style DG rifle with xxxxxxc wood and all the bells an whistles, or a Rem700 blueprinted with a heavy barrel chamber for some vulgar carteridge and duracoated.
Because he made it the way you wanted it.


I do not buy a brand new rifle often, but the absolute best new one was a 375 hh a-bolt stainless stalker. Open box, clean the bore, a quick oiling of the bolt and has worked 100% since.
