On our journey to South Africa next week, we will be spending our long layover in Frankfurt, Germany. What suggestions do you that have been there have as to places to see during the time between our flights? What is the recommended means of transportation from the airport and back later in the day? And lastly, approximately what amount of Euros should I expect to spend on mainly transportation and food? Thanks for any input!

We stayed over in Munch and took the boat tour .... I really enjoyed our time in Germany ........ All transportation was by train or walking ... The people are very friendly and there is lots to see and do .... Also see if you can leave your guns and or bows at Airport Security so you do not have to recheck them ....just ask them to be sure as to what they have listed .... we had a problem in that we had left a bow and gun ...they listed 2 guns ... issue was easy to resolve because we had pictures of the equipment .

I also recommend the train..

you can catch it at the airport and it will take you anywhere you want to go in the city thats worth going to..

The last time we transited through Frankfurt we had a 12 hour layover.. We arrived about 10AM and departed for Jo'berg a little after 10PM I believe..

We hopped the train and went to the "Old Town" and hung out there for about 6 hours before heading back to the airport.. there are some touristy type shops in the area.. lots of good restaurants with decent lunch menus and plenty of beer choices available.. and some other stuff worth seeing like the "lock bridge", a couple of historic boats on the riverfront, museums, an 18th century police station, etc.. and are all within walking distance..

Oh for the love of god get a Schnitzel Sandwich and see "The Wall"...the Walmart of Red Light Districts

Thanks for the suggestion. Old Town sounds like the place to go. Rifles aren't an issue. I'll be using the PH's. Just have to figure out how many Euros I'll need for the day.

for those that have done the layover in Frankfurt.....are there any issues with rifles? We will likely be flying Lufthansa from IAH to Frankfurt, then on to Johannesburg in June, with a 13 hour layover in Frankfurt.

About 6 years ago 3 of us flew thru there from Atlanta then on to Namibia with guns. No problems with guns on either end of the trip. Piece of cake. Now this is where the story gets funny from my point of few. The trip is me , my wife and a friend of ours from her work. When we landed in Frankfurt we left the airport and guns stayed in transit. We got a day room then hopped the train down town for some sight seeing and lunch. Great time!! When we went back to airport we all went thru security again. We all had basically the same stuff in our carry ons. Binoculars, flashlights, rangefinder and such. I walked thru , friend walks thru and as my wife walks thru they stop her and go thru her baggage. She’s a little miffed but finally let thru. Now we didn’t make fun of her or nothing like that. On the way home when we get to Frankfurt, back thru security again. Same scenario only this time they pulled the wife out of line and called the cops and a lady security person then they took her to a room and gave her a full body security screening and everything out of her bags. She was not a happy camper. Now did I mention that my wife is a 5,3” blond haired blue eyed engineer from Texas!! Insert Nerd here!! Now she is really pissed but she held her tongue. Cops made Delta show up and prove she had a ticket. Then they let her go. Even I know not to laugh at her now. She looked at me and said we are never f$&king coming thru Frankfurt again!! I’m pretty sure there were other expletives used but I tried to block those out!! But back to the question no problem with guns at all!!!

well atleast the guns made it through!! My wife would have murdered me in the airport I would've been laughing so hard at her. We are travelling with our 7 year old son and he keeps saying he wants to take an animal while we're there, so I'm taking my 375H&H and 6.5 Creedmoor incase he wants to shoot something.

Oh yeah we were laughing!!! She had smoke coming out of her ears!!! We were rotfl!!! It didn’t help on her outlook!!!
