I'm interested in hunting a Cape Buffalo in July 2019, maybe a week earlier or later. My criteria is:
- It does not have to be a "trophy", but does have to be a nice mature bull with hard boss. I do not hunt with a measuring tape, but I do intend to have it mounted.
- The hunt has to be in South Africa
- The hunt has to be within driving distance of Johannesburg
- I'm expecting the hunt area to be 25000 acres (about 11,000 ha) or more. I'll consider smaller, but I'll need to be convinced that it's a "free range" style hunt.
- At this point I'm only looking for who has the buffalo in the area I'm interested in, then I will visit with you in Dallas at the DSC convention in January and we can discuss this in detail. I'm also looking for comments as to whether what I have listed here is even reasonable so I can revise my expectations if needed.

Thanks.

You can have a high quality hunt on a smaller acreage if you research the place well!

Thanks for your detailed request: we conduct buff hunts in 7 Provinces in South Africa. But I would first like to know what is your criteria or definition of a 'free range style buff hunt' please. I guess anyone wanting to offer you a buff hunt would need to have this question answered. Thanks in advance

Good Day Sir

We have good buffalo available in various and different size areas in SA , but like Umlilo said we need to know your criteria of "free range ".Would be very happy to sit down at DSC with you and discuss this in more detail.

Regards

Rouan

Good day sir,
We will be happy to discuss a possible Buff hunt with you at DSC in 2019.
We will also attend the AH dinner.
If you would be so kind to PM me your phone number, I will be happy to contact you when we are in Dallas to possibly meet up.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

I think we tick all the boxes.
Please see our website.
Alternatively, you can contact me directly.

Kind regards James Cameron

Dear Sir
Please feel free to email me for further questions, info@spearsfaris.com. I have two options for your hunt. 10 000 hectares north of the Soutpansberg, about 5 hours drive from Johannesburg.
Or 5000 hectares in the Drakensberg mountains, this can be a very hard hunt. About 4,5 hours drive from Johannesburg.

Good day sir,

Jacques Spamer here, I have close to 50 000acres with a wide variety of bulls available in the area. No inner fences or camps. I have sent you a private message and would love to discuss further details on what you are looking for.

I will be in touch soon.

Beat regards,

Jacques

We have a couple options for you one concession is just under 20,000 acres and one that is 16,000 acres both approx. 5 hr drive from JNB.
I will be at the AH Dinner in Dallas would be great to meet and discuss the options with you. Call or email me any questions you might have.

Great strategy. I'll be interested to see how it works out for you down the road. I might just try the same thing next time...

I agree. I'm also concerned that I may not ask the right questions to get the info I'm looking for.

I agree with this also, but don't have a really definitive answer because it depends on the terrain, how the animals are managed and a few other things - thus the reason for discussing this in Dallas. However, let me try to explain it this way. I'm after a hunt of "wild" buffalo, I want to go after them, not wait at a watering hole or feed trough for them to come by. I want to have to "work" for the animal. I want the animal to be familiar with it's territory and capable of "getting away" if he's not hunted properly.
Definitions -
"wild" - a animal that is not used to being around people and is wary when one appears. My understanding of South Africa is that all hunting ranches are high fenced on their perimeter. Interior fencing used to control where the animals can go is of interest to me. I understand the need for some, but it starts getting into "not wild"
"work" - I expect that it will take awhile to find tracks, then another while to follow them, then have them run off because I made a mistake and have to start all over. Then we end up in a bad spot and have to back track to go around to a different location.
"getting away" - having enough room to run away if I mess up. (I don't know how far they run, but they need enough room to be comfortable). Or to be able to hide in a ravine, or to disappear. But this part also concerns me from the stand point of a wounded buffalo. I've read stories that buffaloes can absorb 7 to 9 shots before they are down. There is one here on AH about a 416 thru the heart and needing a 2nd shot and he still went 50 yards and this was at a distance of 25 yards. I will want to spend some time talking with the PH to be sure both of us are comfortable with each other, including language comprehension.

look forward to your response
