Has anyone here had an experience using the .300 Savage in Africa ?
I would not have ever considered it but I picked up an almost perfect 1938 vintage Model 99 at a gun show in this caliber and it is an absolute dream to carry and shoot . I realize it is very simular to the .308 that has been discussed to death but I was just wondering if anyone here has any real experience with this gun/caliber on African game ?

i have two Remington .300 savages, a early 722 and a 700 classic. being bolt actions I can load them right up to a 308 win. I have taken large white tail deer 150-170 lbs with 165gr bullets at 2600+fps. I have hunted Africa and think you will be ok with the right bullets and pick your shots at reasonable ranges.

Why not Tex?

It's your hunt, if the animal runs off after being hit it will be you who pays....right?

I have a brand new pre 64 sill in the brown paper wrap inside the box that's in 300 Savage. There's a collector interested and truthfully I never fired the round in anything.

Shoot um up!

Have a model 99 300 savage as well and when discussed in past was told it’s a Great Plains game gun. My grandfather hunted Connecticut whitetail with it, I’ve killed a ram and a hog with it. Seems good to me. Only issue i have is I’m stocked up on Remington core lokt for it and had mixed results from Remington in my other guns. If I took on big hunt I’d be reloading/buying reloads

Can't see why a .300 savage wouldn't be just fine. Beyond just fine with barnes or other modern quality bullet.

7x57 has killed more game in Africa than probably all others combined (except maybe the poacher's kalishnakov). A .300 savage is not that much different than a 7x57. Bigger bullet, worse BC, a bit more oomph. Net-Net probably the same.

Haven't used it in Africa. Only taken whitetail with it. Over the years, people have taken everything in North America with that combo. Just use good bullets and moderate your range and the rest (the shooting) is up to you. As Van S. said , it's your $$$. I'd load 165 gr or 180 gr Swifts or Nosler Partitions and have at it.

The current Sports Afield has a good article on this cartridge.

I have 2 one Sav 99 and Remington Classic. Only ever killed a couple of Deer and couple of Bear with it. 180gr. Core Lokt worked fine. A lot of the older hunters in our area bought them as a modern cartridge to replace their old caliber lever actions and bolt military guns. They killed a lot of Elk and Moose with this caliber but hunting was in timber so max would have been 150 yds and mostly under a 100.

You will be just fine with a good bullet and straight shooting.

I have put down a few animals with even smaller calibers.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
