Hi guys,

For those of you who hunt in very cold, what jackets do you suggest? Spending time in Canada this Christmas and I'm looking to purchase 1 good quality jacket...

Hi alexandro,
I am from Iowa, and hunt white tail deer, coyotes, and other fur bearing animals in the cold. One thing I try to do is to focus on dressing in layers. I do use an artic shield coat on the outside. Underneath I wear a thermal long sleeve, another long sleeve sweater, and may throw on a fleece jacket as well if it is very frigid. I really focused on something that would break wind with my coat.
For my pants I used a bit more bulky pant that is more like a snow pant. I don’t remember the brand, but they are very warm. Red head possibly? I do not mind the bulky ness with the pants, as I don’t need as much movement to shoot a gun or bow with my legs. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Layers is always the best option.

Where are you going to be in Canada?
What are you doing? Outside for 12 hours above the Arctic Circle

Long ago I spent over a year in the coldest climate on this Earth and learned that to keep warm is best done in layers.

And on top of it all, a shell that wind won't go through.

I agree with the layering system. Seems that one parka is to limiting especially if mountain hunting.
Take it for what it is worth but I have froze my ass off from Western Montana to Just below the Arctic Circle until I figured this out. I start with a good thermal bottom layer, followed by a mid weight middle and covered by a wind proof outer layer. I prefer Sitka, KUIU and core 4(I think they are called Element now).
I also carry a light weight kelvin in my pack for the times I am sitting still glassing. I think it weighs something ridiculous like 8 oz. I know it is less than a can of soda. My Dad always told me you can’t use it if you leave it in the truck so I have always carried more than I need and it has saved my butt twice in the high country. I tried to instill these in my oldest son but he learned the hard way on an open ridge with 40 mph wind. I finally broke down and gave him my Kelvin jacket. Haha. He takes his backpack now.
If you watch camofire.com they have some smoking deals on this kind of stuff all the time.
Cheers,
Cody

Von, when did you spend a year with my ex wife?

Nothing better IMO than Northern outfitters artic clothing. A bit bulky but extremely warm. A lot will depend on what your doing, will you be ice fishing? Or will you be active? Layering with higher quality gear has always been the right approach.

Bullthrower,

Not only did I spend a year with her....I messed up and married her too! Hahaha

And though Antarctica is the coldest climate it is mercifully the second driest on Earth which allows it to feel warmer.

I almost got to go build some tanks there once. Unfortunately it didn’t happen. I bet it is a neat place to visit.

We're you with Holmes and Narver construction?

Yes! It's pretty neat. And like many places in the world, a person's first mistake is sometimes their last. I always kept my survival gear with me.
