Any experience with new M70's made in Portugal?

I'm pretty sure your gun was made in South Carolina and not Utah.

I used a Winchester Extreme Weather in 300 winmag as a loan rifle in Namibia. I was very impressed with it, and have just ordered a 30-06 from Belgium. I don't believe they are routinely imported into the UK, but it should arrive in a couple of week.

Another thing I like about the new Winchester is how clean they are out of the box, I always pull my new acquisitions apart a give them a going over and the Portugues Winchesters don't require much work

I own three model 70,s, two left hand sporters a 7mm mag and 300 wm, US made an a right hand featherweight SS walnut .270 and so US made. all three are a match for my pre-64 .270 made in 1951.

I recently purchased an as new Model 70 Sporter in 300 Win Mag. It is one of the Portugal rifles imported by BATCO. The fit and finish of the rifle are good, and the bolt is extremely smooth. So far, I have found this rifle likes 180 grain Ballistic Tips and little of anything else. I realize this is not a bench rest rifle, but expected better than minute of 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper from it. The rifle has been bedded now and I'll pick it back up after giving it a rest. I like the rifle, and want it to shoot well. Its performance with the Ballistic Tip load is the only reason it wasn't let go.

Makes me want to go back to my Contenders, they are much less picky and shoot circles around this rifle currently.

I bought a Portugal made Model 70 in .458 Win Mag. It feeds and ejects everything I put in it. Accuracy wise it will only hold about two to three inch groups at 40 yards. My CZ 550 Safari Magnum in the same caliber will shoot about one and a half inch groups at 60 yards but it has feed issues and I have spent a lot of money trying to get this corrected. My Kimber Caprivi 458 Lott wouldn't hit the the paper at 40 yards and even after adjusting the sights as far as it would go it still shot four to six inches low. It had feed and ejection issues and I paid twice as much for the rifle. It went back to Kimber and got a new barrel, extractor and ejector and it was test fired at 50 yards where it shot .095" with 500 grain Hornady's. Needless to say I was about burned out on bolt actions. In a fit of desperation I bought a used Merkel double in 500 Nitro. I was able to shoot within two inches at 40 yards offhand with reloaded 570 grain Woodleigh softpoints. My feeding and ejection problems has went away. My pocket book went smaller because this rifle was 9500.00$. It did not have the auto ejectors but with all the other issues I really didn't care for the simple fact that it works. I personally have come to the conclusion that when you get up to a 458 caliber or bigger dangerous game rifles that if you want it to work you will be in the five digit range in price or damn close. You may be hard pressed to find a US made rifle that will do it. I just thought I would pass on my experiences with DG rifles thus far and helI i aint even made it to Africa yet.

i can,t speak for the bigger calibers in the CZ 550,s, but this CZ 550 in .375 H&H mag. has never given a problem working or hitting what you aimed at if you were up to it. this target was shot in Botswana at 100 yards from a good rest, one shot by me and then one by my PH after I had sighted it in and left it cool down. my shot was at 10:30 and the PH,s was at 4:00, both shots were inside the 1-1/4" 9 ring.

From what I've read on this forum and elsewhere the CZ works real well with pointed bottleneck bullets especially in the 375. The big shells is where you can have a problem. If CZ can get this problem resolved they will have the market cornered. I expect the price will be higher.

I collected my M70 Extreme Weather in 30-06 last week, mounted a Zeiss Victory 3-12x56 on it, and headed to the range today. I tried Winchester PowerPoint, Remington corelokt and RWS DK; the RWS shot a 3 round cloverleaf group at 100 yards. Very impressed with the accuracy, and the rifle performed flawlessly. The only thing I need to do is lighten the trigger pull slightly.

My 300 likes the 180 grain Ballistic Tips ahead of 68.0 grains of IMR 4350.

I have 2 70s, one 375HH and one 7Rem mag both Portugal made. They both shoot 1moa @100, look and function perfectly. They have been to Africa for DG with the 375 and Texas for blackbuck with the 7. When I open the bolt and tip the muzzle down the bolt slides home slick as glass on both of them. Just lock it down and ready to go. The safeties are a little stiff but I figure that's just the 3 position mechanism.

They are not particular what I feed them, either. They give me 1moa @ 100. I tried 130,150 and 160 grain in the 7, 235, 270, 300 and 350 grain in the 375 and all shot great.
