Dear all,

Looking for a bit of input on anyone whose loaded 7x57 with RL 19 in either 173g or 175g please..

I know Alliant states 48g, but that's just about the most useless information ever, and there's no start load, etc. etc.

my 160g shoots 46.5g, so I'm thinking the heavier bullet may need to be closer to 44g, but the velocity might then not start much above 2000

Have you tried the 156 gr Oryx? 2nd most accurate load in my CZ 550(still MOA) and it hits like a ton of bricks with very high weight retention, run it with 46 gr of H4350.

Hey,

Shot, and shoot the oryx 156g loads, very very good indeed, but here in the UK it's sailing close to $90 per 20, so it's just too darn expensive.

I've just received 200x RWS 173g RNSP which are for Roe deer, some red deer, sika, etc.

Since most good US propellants are now banned in the UK, I'm using Alliant or Swiss..but for the 173g in 7x57, it will be RL19.

Just hoping for a few ideas of moderate velocity loads other members have used

Sorry, the 156 Oryx is all I hunt with, around 80 bucks a hundred. Factory rounds runs around 50 dollars per 20.

I had good groups with 46 and 47 grs of it with Hornady bullets, however overall I had better luck with Re22 and with that up to 51 grs was shooting sub MOA groups. Remember that Re22 is the same powder as Norma MRP so if you cant find one look for the other, same stuff.

Hi fiocchi,

My two favorites powders for heavy bullets in the 7x57 (I reload mines since 1973...) are R19 and R22.
In a rifle with a C.I.P. chamber and barrel specifications, or in an original sporting Mauser (including the ones sold as Rigby .275...), or in an original military Mauser for the 7x57, a muzzle velocity about 2600 f/s with 175 grs bullets is entirely safe with any of these powders. It is a good working max safe load.
So, going down from there, you can get 2500 f/s very easy. I sugest 49/50 grs of R19 in a rifle like those, for around 2500 f/s. This would be a very good normal load!

Good luck!

I don't think you Americans realise how cheap you have it with ammo and guns!

In aus I looked at oryx but in 7mm they were $120 per hundred, when barnes are $85 per 50 i thought i may as well pay the extra few bucks for them.

Following this thread as i would like to try a 170 to 175 gn pill some day

These must be heavily compressed loads, the reload data barnes supplied me and that i found on ADI website say my 150s are only going to get to ~2500fps

A 7x57 with 160gr projectiles (in a modern action) will easily reach 27oo fps with no pressure problems (I easily reached it with my BRNO 600 in 7x57). So a 175 to 2500fps shouldn't be a problem.
Most modern reloading data books keep 7x57 load data to very low pressures in case someone uses them in an older/weaker action.

Not sure I would say its easy to do, but I have done it as well. I could drive the same bullet to just over 2900 fps in a .280 Rem or 7x64.

Cheers for the info, makes sense as i thought they seemed mild.

Do you happen to have any data for loading 150s? Was planning on running ADI 2209 or R19.

50-51 grs of R19 with 150's is good.

50gr 2209 gave 2672fps with 162gr hornady BTSP, I never loaded for 150gr. I might have some other load data at home.

Hello fiocchi,

Here are SPEER most recent load data for 160 and 175 grs bullets.
Good Luck!

Nosler seems to be about the only company who consistently publishes for modern actions of those old calibers.

Swift, Norma, Hornady, and Lyman all publish for original rifles chambered in both 7x57 and 6.5x55.

Matter of fact, a Swift engineer called me yesterday based on an email I sent a week or so ago about those two cartridges specifically, and said that very thing (about Swift specifically, not the rest).

Thanks for all the input chaps!

This is for a Brno 21h square bridge small ring with a 20” barrel.

I’d love to start at 43 and work up to 49, but it will eat most of my bullet supply so I need to find a 2400-2500 FPS load range for the 173g and RL 19. I have this gut feeling about 45-47g, but I guess I will have to Chrono them.

Hello fiocchi!

I bet 47 grs, will do in your lovely BRNO 21 and its long chamber throat ! It is a rather mild load. Even with Remington or RWS cases.
By the way, I don't know way but, specially in the 7 mm Mauser, the Remington cases are the heaviest of the USA made ones by many grains. The RWS are, traditionally, also heavy, and the VERY BEST in almost all cartridges. This means they have, both, the least volume inside. But, I say again, even if you use one of those, don't waste bullets and powder with a lower powder load!

Good luck and tell us your results !
