Successful solo Gemsbok Horn primitive barebow hunt...eventually !
Full penetration on this Impala with a 125 gr 2 blade fixed blade broadhead at +_ 120-130 f/sec @ 55-60 pd horn bow.
Instinctive shooting [LOTS of practice beforehand !]
The arrow went through both lungs and the top of the heart.
I've found it dead inside of 25 m.
I've waited 4 years for this perfect shot with this unique bow...
Thanks again Henk at Aloe Rock hunting -Limpopo !

How far do you draw this bow? Are the arrows timber?

Absolutely classic! I read of an American making a gemsbok horn bow in TBM once.

Very cool! Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Can’t you afford a rifle:ROFLMAO::D:LOL:! Just kidding! That is just amazing that you could do that! Even a free bow with no sight amazes me, but a bow this primitive is awesome!
Thanks for sharing this special occasion!

Absolutely awesome! I plan to make one of these. I have a 36” female oryx from 2014 and just took two in July in Namibia. A 35” male and a 39” female. Trying to decide which to use. I would love to hear the detail on how you made the riser and what you put on the ends to keep the string from coming off when drawing the bow. I’ll likely PM you. Well done and congrats!

Hi MIKE,

I also wanted to take a blue wildebeest with this horn bow for 2 years now.
As I could not find any info on this type of hunt with this type of bow, I was a bit hesitant to take the BWB opportunities I got , as I didn't want to hunt [in my mind] maybe unethical.

That is why I've decided to first hunt an Impala with it this year as an experiment to observe the performance and 'killing' effectiveness of this horn bow.

I can now say with full confidence after my successful Impala hunt that it will perform well on bigger game like BWB or Zebra on shorter distances , provided perfect shot placement [as with all hunting tools !].

I am not that young anymore so the +_ 70 pd that I received this bow with were a bit too much for me, thought the builder of the bow [younger ,bigger and stronger than me] had no problem with it with excellend 3 arrow groupings at 20 m.

I had then send it back to him requesting for some modifications [took away some more horn] and it is now about 55-60pd.

It is still strong enough [momentum] to fully penetrate an Impala at 10 m.

A added advantage that we found was that it is a more 'silent' bow with less 'twang' of of the string than a modern bow and that at shorter distances there were much thus less 'string jumping' of animals.

All in all this bow is an adequate and ethical hunting tool, the same as all others if you put in enough instinktive practice, don't take unnecessary chances and have good shot placement at shorter distances.

All the best!
[I have forwarded your email to the bow builder]

Gemsbok never did it for me, but seeing that i want one now just to have a bow made like that!

Awesome! Congrats!

I am still wanting to shoot a BWB with a bow like that. I never did find out where I can get one.

I ended up buying a 100# Black Widow recurve last night. If the price isn't too exorbitant, I might still get one of these if I can ever locate the guy who makes them.

The bow maker is Laing Vermeulen from the Western Cape Province--he is also on fb
