My calculations have me paying $250.00 each way on Emirates air from Seattle to Johannesburg to take my rifle as over. That does not include $130 I am paying for help at the airport and fee to get it to Port Elizabeth. Is this right?

No. What you pay to Rifle Permits is a separate issue to quickly get you through SAPS once you arrive and obtain your temporary gun license. I fly Delta to Johannesburg. My rifle case is my second checked bag. There is no extra charge. I have never flown Emirates, so I have no idea whether they have a separate gun charge or not. I know that British Airways does.

I don’t think so, unless something has changed recently. We took that Emerites flight from Seattle to Joberg connecting through Dubai in Sept 2016 and I was able to take my rifle as luggage no charge. Just have to do the transfer paperwork to get the gun transferred in Dubai but it was all on the Emerites website and easy.

I have all paperwork but just did oversize calculations for a 52" double case and it came out to $250 each way. Crazy!! I won't pay that.

I may me mistaken but my case also exceeds the 52” mark. But no one at the airport measured it and I wasn’t offering the info. So it cost me nothing.

And my last trip was in 2016 and I flew Emirates out of Seattle.

I just confirmed with emirates and that is the charge. Don't fly emirates if you want to take firearm. Already learning lessons and I haven't even left. I hope it doesn't continue. The gun stays home!!

Regular U.S. Gov't. approved gun case should be a part of your checked bag allowance. Delta doesn't charge for gun cases. If you've got one of those humongous aluminum steamer trunk like gun cases, you'll most likely get dinged for oversize baggage. That I would leave at home. One of my buds took his after I advised him against it. That year we went Air France and what they charged each way, he could have bought TWO gun cases.

I would call Emirates again. One never knows if the person on the other end of the line knows WTF they're talking about and if the information is correct.

For United and Delta, any bag that is over a certain total number when you add length, width and depth is oversized and you "should" by their written policies have to pay extra for that piece of luggage regardless of what is in it. My Pelican Storm case's total number is considerably more than that number which I have forgotten. My case has been on Delta twice and United once and they have never charged me extra for oversize.

Just looked it up for Delta. The total cannot exceed 62 inches. My case is 77 inches, but never charged for it.

That is the difference between delta and Emirates. They confirmed what their calculator said. My case is 52" long and nothing crazy.

I flew Emirates with a tuffpac last year and there was no additional charge.

Never been charged by either Emirates or Delta for my Pelican 1750 as second checked bag. I’m flying Emirates next week SEA-DXB-HRE and I don’t expect any additional charge.

@Washingtonmuley. if your case is 52 inches long, your overall measurement (length plus width plus height) will be more than 59 inches which is their cutoff for not charging extra. You are correct that their policy is to charge you $250 extra. Quite a few AH members have flown Emirates and this is the first time I have heard of them charging this fee. I would still make a few MORE calls to them to confirm they actually charge you this fee for a gun case. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Delta and United both have this policy for over 62 inches, but never charge it (in my experience) for a gun case....Good Luck!

Policy vs execution.

Read the fine print; most airlines have written into their policies that 'sporting goods' items that exceed the size limit won't be charged extra. That's why Delta, etc., don't charge. They worry about weight more than size.

Nice to know!

Emirates so far has been the best airline I have used for traveling with firearms. Last year I was met by an Emirates representative at the Alaska Airlines gate, accompanied to baggage and assisted with getting rifles rechecked onto Emirates. The representative then came on board before departure to confirm for me that my bags had been loaded onto the aircraft.
On the way back a representative was waiting to assist me in Seattle when I cleared customs and made sure firearms arrived and I got on my way to Alaska Airlines for the final leg home. It felt like VIP service both ways! The experience I had with Emirates was so far superior to Delta in every way, and for much less money, I will likely not fly Delta again unless I have to.
I would just book with Emirates and not worry about it. They seemed much more worried about getting me and my guns where I was going, and treating me in a very respectful and professional manner, than anything else.
