Anyone have any load data for Norma 286 gr that doesn't use norma powder?

Sgt_ Zim, I see that you were referred to Nathan Foster's Knowledge Base. I'm glad to see that others are making reference to it. This is where I get my 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser reload data from. Back to the 9.3 x 62, I see that Nathan suggests the use of IMR 4064 which is the same powder I use in my 35 Whelen. Works well.

I use 56gr ADI2208 which is the same as Varget. This is with a 286gr prvi partisan roundnose. Gives 2200ish in a 24" barrel. This is essentially a start load so would be fine to start with the Norma projectile. Other people I know use ADI2209 which is H4350.

I was re-looking at the western powders data.

They're showing 2550 fps with 62 gr of Big Game for 286 gr bullets. That seems crazy high for that weight. Does that sound right to you guys @Shootist43 and @375 Ruger Fan ?

My gripe about Varget is I run out of case capacity between 55 and 56 grains. Hornady and Nosler both have published loads for it.

If I can get an accurate and honest 2500 fps out of Partitions or Orxy/Alaska 285, I reckon those will end up being my loads.

I did some load development with the 285-grain Norma Oryx and RL-15. I was impressed that I got to 58 grains without showing any signs of excess pressure. I'm going to shot the oryx, Lupua Mega and the Nosler Partition with the RL-15 this weekend. I also worked a big with Big game. I had seen one load table online where they went to 66 grains with the Partition, but checked the Western website and saw a max of 62 grains. The Mega gave 2,478 and the Oryx went 2,488 at that grain weight. This was out of the 24" barrel of my Forbes 24B (I had the rifle rebarreled by Douglas).

I do not own or reload for a 9.3 x 62. I ran a couple of possibilities through my QuickLoad software and got the following: Woodleigh 286 Gr. PP Weldcore bullet pushed by 64.6 Gr of Win 760 for 2527 FPS. Most of the time QuickLoad's results are fairly accurate. So I'd have to say that 2500 (+) FPS is possible. Note that bullet selection plays a big part in determining case capacity. You simply cannot substitute one 'equal" weight for another. Hopefully some 9.3 x 62 owners will chime in here with their pet/favorite loads. While the QuickLoad suggested load is probably correct it is theoretical until proven. Actual loads used by others should be weighed against it for comparison purposes.

waiting for a range report with baited breath.

I may continue to work up some stuff with 2000 MR. at 62 gr, nothing even remotely close to pressure signs with the hornady. I'm well below COAL with the hornady and 2000 MR.

@Vanguard2279 - Hornady and Nosler have 286 gr loads for RL-15 up to 58.1 and 58.5 grains, respectively

Found a load at loaddata.com that came from handloader issue #250 66 gr of Big Game pushing a 286 partition at just short of 2500.

Reading Foster's write-up on 9.3, just makes me realize that I need to stay north of 2400 at the muzzle

@sgt_zim : Do what you got to do, but the 66 grains of Big Game would be way over-pressure in my rifle. I saw the same data. However, I checked the Ramshot website and found 62 grains as a max. We all know that every rifle is different and some handle pressure better than others. Having said that, I have flat primers at 62 grains, but I did not have sticky bolt lift. I worked up from 59 grains. I shot both 285-grain Lupua Mega and Norma Oryx at 62 grains which gave me 2,478 fps and 2,488 fps respectively. The Mega did give me a three shot 1" group, though.
I've had a fair amount of success with 58.5 grains of RL-15 and the Lupua Mega. One four shot group into 1" this morning.

Well done on the shooting.

I sorta figured that 66 gr sounded far-fetched. Even Ramshot's published data for 286 gr @2550 fps sounds overly optimistic. Who knows without some testing, right? FWIW, and amazingly, the 286 partition has the highest BC of any of the premium 286 grs (Lapua, Swift, Woodleigh, and Norma are all below .4), so maybe 2500 is possible.

One thing I was looking at on the Hornady vs Nosler: the cannelure on the Hornady is a bit closer to the ogive than it is on the Nosler. If I seat both bullets at the cannelure and use the same charge weight of powder, this would seem to suggest that the more deeply-seated Hornady will be faster since the firing chamber is slightly smaller. Or have I got it precisely backwards?

Tell me what powder charge you want to use and I'll run both through QuickLoad and let you know. If both bullets are seated at the cannelure what is the overall length of both? Several months ago I made up some loads for my 404 Jeffery. I used the same powder charge Von Gruff gave me, but I substituted a 400 Gr Swift A Frame for the Woodleigh bullet he used. Result, significantly over recommended pressure. The Swift A Frame is longer therefore sat deeper in the case resulting in the higher pressure.

@Shootist43 - I'm presently out of brass, so let's assume COAL for the nosler at published length of 3.290. For the Hornady, I found my spot at 3.165 (a little past their published max of 3.125). Crimp is in the very bottom of the cannelure at that length.

Alliant 2000MR (currently giving me avg of 2420 with Hornady) vs Ramshot Big Game, both 62 grains. 560 mm barrel, Norma brass, cci LR primers

btw, I found a LH 416 Ruger African, 23", muzzle break, but the kitty is bone dry right now. Only about $950, too.

Happy Indepedence Day! I just lit the smoker, gonna do a pork tenderloin, some ribs, and some sausage. it'll be ready around 3PM down here.
