The wait is nearly over, and I'll be heading to Namibia in 8 days time....I'll need a book or two to read on the plane. Ideally something about hunting in Africa, but willing to consider any recommendations (within reason; my wife will be in the next seat!).

White Hunters:The Golden Age of African Safaris by Brian Herne
Excellent timeline of the history of East Africa hunting until its end in the ‘70s.

Great question @Donnachaidh

A few that I LOVE.....

Death in the Tall Grass - Peter Hathaway Capstick
Sands of Silence - Peter Hathaway Capstick (one of PHC's last books, written on a safari in Namibia)
White Hunters - Brian Herne
Along the Hunters Path - Kai Uwe Denker

When you arrive at the Airport in Johannesburg, go to a book store and buy yourself an "African Outfitter" magazine... It's a great magazine with lots of interesting stories. It will kill some time, and there is lots of pictures to look at as well!

My best,
Jacques

Wanderings of an elephant hunter and Karamojo Safaris by William Bell.

Any of capsticks books are great. I enjoy Jim Corbett books. Are you looking for hard copy’s or for a kindle. I have a good number of great books in both of my libraries. Although not about Africa man eaters of kumoan and leopard of Rudraprayag are great books

The maneating leopard of rudraprayag is in my top two books along with no more the tusker.

Been trying to get my hands on a hard cover version of jungle lore for a fair while without luck

A great hunting book to read is The Hunting Imperative by Richard Harland it's so good i have read it several times.

A great fiction book, written by a member here on AH and a perfect read for one way is Sibanda by Tim Farren.

For a fun adventure read try "The Seventh Scroll" by Wilbur Smith.

One other classic is "Hunter" by J A Hunter. Published the year I was born, 1952, I read it when I was around twelve or fourteen, and it was the piece of Africana that set my sights upon reaching Africa someday. It is still in publication and can be found very easily on the web. Another that I have read several times.

But make sure you read 'River God' first and it will make much more sense.

Hunting Ngoro Ngoro Crater in the early days had to be special.

Highly agree with any of capsticks stuff and would add any of ruarks books at top of the list. Check out “it shouldn’t happen” by Kevin Robertson-more modern fun stories and experiences. -sorry for the bad punctuation-

Been staring at my “bookshelf” and distracted for awhile now. Older title I would reread Green Hills of Africa by Hemingway. Recent title and for certain since you are Namibia bound “Morning Shadows, Evening Sun” by Brad Fitzpatrick. When I fly out next month I’m taking the newest decade book by Boddington and some classics by Russell Annabel about Alaska. . .
Some of those are available in paperback, most available by safari press and amazon is one of my best resources for book buying-have a great hunt and journey

I am building up a library of hunting and gun books any suggestion are welcome. Thanks.

Good morning Bapu-there are lots of good authors mentioned in this thread and any would be a good place to start.
If I was starting anew, I would Start with Capstick, Bell, Boddington. Each of those authors have multiple options in the categories you mention and are worth reading and re reading. I’m re reading one now by Walter Prothero which is another author with lots of options that should be included in a hunters bookshelf-but again, all mentioned so far in this thread are must haves-enjoy!

Please feel free to suggest with titles as am looking for solid hunting tips along with tips on calibers. Thank you.
