So my first trip is in 77 days. I'll be at hunterhill safari in the Eastern cape. I was wondering about vaccines. I imagine your typical booster is needed and twinrix will be a must. From what I understand malaria is not a concern in my region so I don't need anything for that. Is there anything else that's needed? I am Canadian so all the other Canadians will know what we are typically vaccinated for from childhood.

Hep A and B, might as well make sure your up on tetanus and MMR. I'd take malaria meds as precaution as well.

When you say take malaria meds. You mean actually take the vaccine or bring meds along with me?

Take pills along with you

The US Centers for Disease Control suggests a typhoid fever immunization for travel to Africa.

Most malaria meds need to be started before trip, used during trip, and for a couple weeks after. I’ve only used them in zim and Botswana. Eastern cape you should be good. Best of luck and laugh often

Yeah.... what @reedy0312 said. As for the Malaria pills, your doc will probably prescribe. However, this time of year & that location. There is basically 0% chance of contracting. The side effects of Larium are not worth taking if it were me.

Holy pin cushion!

I thought the whole point of hunting an area advertised as being malaria free was that its malaria free. LOL

Bring a bottle of anti-biotics.

Yellow Fever, Hep A&B (twinrix, may be too late for that), MMR, tetanus booster and maybe the pneumonia vaccine. The rest of them? Are you hunting out of a thatched roof hunt in a native village with dirt floors and animals wandering in and out with no sanitary facilities? If not, wouldn't touch that other stuff. I'm not a doctor but I did stay at a Holiday Inn a few years ago. Oh yeah, some malaria meds can stop up your plumbing for an extended period. One of my hunting buds went a week. Remember, your brain doesn't control your body. It's an orifice that does that. :Arghh: YMMV.

Edit: I'm old and had chickenpox so I got the Shingrix vaccine. Don't need shingles anywhere, especially away from home. YMMV.

Doxycycline serves as a dual purpose med, malaria and a kind of antibiotic..... I figure if your spending $5K, 10K, or more, whats a $30-$50 malaria med insurance policy. Even if your not hunting in a Malaria area, you just never know and you also transit through Joburg. So Why not take precaution? My 2 Cents anyways

This medication is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including those that cause acne. This medication is also used to prevent malaria. This medication is known as a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Doxy is great for prevention of tick fever but I wouldn't trust it for malaria. I use malerone.
Larium has too many side effects one being extreme sensitivity to Sun.

Are any of these vaccinations reqd or are they just recommended? I guess I’ll ask my local doctor and my ph but it looks like recommended. . .

Last time I went to RSA I came down with a cold. Thank goodness it didn't go into my lungs. Would have been tough stalking buffalo with a bad cough. I was over it before I came home.

Read what Jacques said above. You have to start them prior to departing!

Certainly, I should have noted that in my original response. Some meds are two weeks prior and Doxy is 2 days prior plus while over then and then after returning.

When I checked that list before I went over in 2015 the only shot that they recommended was a tetanus booster.

Talk to your outfitter. Ours supplied bottle drinking water and when we went through a town we would stock up on it ourselves. As was mentioned on the malaria pills it is going to depend on where you are hunting. I was down on the south side of the Eastern Cape so I didn't bother. Also talking to your doctor and getting some general antibiotics as a just in case is a good idea. I have gout and took some predizone just in case I had a flare up along with my usually medicines and some over the counter or under it allergy pills.

Did any of you get the typhoid fever vaccine? Says eating game meat can put you at risk?

I currently have MMR and tetanus already. I'm doing twinrix now. Yellow fever and typhoid I didn't want to if I don't need to. Thoughts?

Where are you planning on hunting?

If up north then I would consider the Yellow fever shot. I never heard that about eating game meat, and we ate quite a bit of it on the Eastern Cape.
