Hunting a tuskless - What to make of the hide etc?

Hunting a tuskless coming november.

Have planned to keep the tail, and get the hide tanned and keep the feet perhaps?

What is it possible to make of it?

Planning on chairs of the hide?

If you can find someone to do it, an elephant hide motorcycle jacket should hold up pretty well.
 
I have hunted tuskless and are waiting for the hide. I’ve ordered the 5 panels of hide, to be tanned with natural color, and are planning to get done a couple of gun bags/sleeves etc. The feet made into 4 small sitting things, the ears done for wall backgrounds behind other trophies...

A good friend of mine gave me a hunting belt with sealed cartridge loops made from Elephant hide.

I used this set-up for a number of years whilst guiding buffalo hunters in Australia where it saw repeated hard use, was regularly soaked in blood (when I recovered trophy heads), dust, mud and grime and lived through it with little to no signs of wear. Very durable AND functional.

I can make everything from furniture to guncases, backpacks, computer bags, etc.... if you can think of it I can make it.

I was just curious about what turns out good and not among the various options :)
 
Does CITES have a quota for tuskless elephant? It was my understanding that generally, only trophy elephant can be exported under a CITES quote. Clearly, that's not right, so I wonder if it depends on the country?

I have to admit though I too am curious where you are hunting to get to import a tuskless. Typically that isn’t legal but if that’s changed how cool is that. Tuskless has always been a very affordable option but a non importable one.
 
I suspect a reason it may have become legal, if it did, was due to the US ban on elephant imports from Zimbabwe. That means Zimbabwe is exporting a lot less elephant trophies than it did and so it may have now allowed the export of tuskless or non trophy elephants to attract more hunters. I think the main reason the export of tuskless would have been banned was to maximize the export of trophy elephant or use up the CITES quota for that...

I guess it is a whole lot more Difficult to the US?

In the past, the issue has not been the import, but rather the export.

Elephant - at least from Southern Africa, is Appendix 2, so requires only an export permit. The US imposes its own rules, so an import permit is required there, but that’s not as a result of CITES. Zimbabwe had no CITES quota for tuskless, at least of the female variety, so nothing could be exported. Any country which is a signatory to CITES is required to ensure that the export permit is in place when any part of the animal is imported. That was one reason, likely the main reason, why these hunts have been so reasonable.

Still not sure what’s changed though.

It would probably be best to talk to your outfitter or the person who would be taking care of the export about that. Also perhaps ask to see a print screen shot or some sort of formal written reply from the Zimbabwean ministry of natural resources or the government agency that deals with this over there to have written confirmation that it is indeed possible and legal.
 
Bondi , Your in Norway , get it done in Africa, Pretty good leather workers there.
Good quality stuff , I don't say that about their taxidermy art. leather wood is a craft and they have Good Craftsmen if you can find the right ones. Tell your PH now to find the best for you.
Save you a LOT of headaches and costs in shipping , cites , and brokers fees with import of raw elephant into the US
and re-export same costs. Out of Zim your stuff will be finished goods, A lot easier to clear customs and weight will be 10% of raw salted skin panels they weigh hundreds of pounds.
