I’m hoping some of the members here can shed some light on the difference. I can get one in .375 H&H in SA - carried, not shot much and in good condition. How do I distinguish between the two. The Dakota website isn’t of much help as the two models carry the same description.

What would a fair price be for a rifle like this in the US/ Canada? I’m willing to pay a premium for the convenience of the rifle being in SA, but not for eg double of what I can bring a good second hand one in for.

To my knowledge the Safari rifle is slightly better appointed (quarter rib, drop box magazine, barrel band front sight...as for wood, Dakota rifles of every level vary a fair bit because wood is an option across the board). Regarding price, here in the States I'd expect a rifle such as the above to bring just under or over 3,000 USD (you'll see them for a lot more but a patient buyer can expect to find one for around 3,000 dollars).

Dewald I would buy this rifle in a heart beat!

Thanks for the info CT Dolan. I think you refer to the African.

The owner wants the equivalent of roughly US$4500, hence my futher research if it is worth my while, or if I must wait patiently for him to become more pressed to sell.

Here are the details from their website:

Dewald I think a fair offer would be between the 25 to 35k mark (Rand). I would also ask the seller to accompany you to a gunsmith to check the bore and chamber as it's one thing to look all good but your not sure how the rifle has been stored.

Darren, the problem is the rifle is at a gunsmith allready, known to be far from shy when making a profit on a sale.

I think that settles it then. Pass on this one and let the 4 year search for a Dakota continue...

Sad to pass it on but think about it, what would it cost you to build a rifle like that? A piece of wood like that built by Steve Fourie will cost you in excess of 20k!

It's a difficult one but if your heart is set on it buy it!

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
