Score another for my beloved Big Cats:

One man is dead and another is injured after they were attacked by a cougar Saturday while mountain biking in Washington State, police said.

King County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Ryan Abbott said the pair, whose identities haven't been released, were attacked while they were going for a mountain bike ride in North Bend, east of Seattle.

It is not clear if the victims were biking together or separately.

The 31-year-old survivor was taken to Harborview medical Center where he remains in serious condition, the hospital said in a statement. He was alert and was heard talking.

The second victim was found dead and, according to Abbott, had not been removed from the scene.

A mountain biker was found dead with a cougar standing over him on a trail #NorthBend. @kingcosoPIO says a second biker was also hurt. Now they are warning hikers to stay away from the Tolt Reservoir/Hancock road area. Working to get more precise location. @KIRO7Seattle

The Washington Department of Fish and Game was tracking the animal down, which reportedly ran into the woods following the attack.

Update: Fish and Wildlife has euthanized the cougar that is believed to be responsible for killing one man and attacking another earlier today.

WOW! We don’t often think of the big cats attacking people here in the states. Sad to hear of the loss of life.

Read there has been a marked increase in cougar attacks over the recent years.

Surprising this attack has been. Must be a seriously starved animal or seriously injured and cannot hunt for its normal food.
Sincere condolences to all concerned.

A cougar that attacked two bikers in Washington state over the weekend, killing one and seriously injuring another, was emaciated, authorities said Sunday.

The cougar was about 100 pounds, making it severely underweight compared normal 3-year-old male cats that weigh 140 to 180 pounds, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police Capt. Alan Myers told Q13 FOX.

Sonja “SJ” Brooks, 32, and Isaac “Izzy” Sederbaum, 31, were biking in the Cascade Mountain foothills 30 miles east of Seattle when they were attacked. Brooks was killed and the cougar had dragged his body to what appeared to be his den.

Brooks and Sederbaum were biking when they noticed the animal following them. They got off their bikes, shouted and tried to scare the cat away — a normal protocol — but it charged at them.
One of the bikers smacked the cougar with a bike and eventually it ran off.
But the cougar returned with a vengeance. It bit Sederbaum in the head.

“The cougar had his head in his jaws and was shaking him violently,” Myers said.

Brooks was attempting to run away when the cougar spotted him, dropped Sederbaum and pounced on the 32-year-old biker.

The cougar killed Brooks and dragged his body into the trees. Sederbaum got back on his bike, rode two miles to where he received cellphone service to call 911. Authorities found the cougar standing on top of Brooks’ body about 30 minutes later.

Sederbaum was said to be in satisfactory condition after being taken to the hospital and treated for lacerations and bites to his neck, head and face.

Officials are also matching the DNA taken from the animal and the victims to ensure they killed the right cougar.

When you outlaw hound hunting cougar populations soar and there is really no other effective means to control populations.

Respectfully you are misinformed about lions. There are more and more lions and where they live near people they become accustomed to people. Where there is no hunting they really lose their fear of man. These attack’s are on the rise but the media does not report it. Much like the wolf attacks that have been suppressed over the years.

I certainly agree with you that cougars, and other large predators as well, which lose their fear of man will come to see man as just another prey species. However, with that being said, I believe Dr. Ray also has a point. In that animals that due to injury, have a hard time cathing their normal prey species are more likely to become man eaters or to attack humans. This has been fairly well documented across different species and even Jim Corbett I believe wrote about it-that most man eating tigers and leopards etc... were suffering from a pathology during their "reigns of terror".

Cougar attacks here on the Vancouver Island are not unusual, fatalities are rare but a few go thru the buzz saw ; often pet walkers. I came very close with my son on a trout fishing trip , if we hadn't been joined by another couple of adults on the trail ; I think the cat would have given it ago. He stalked us (my son & I) plainly visible for about ten minutes, gets your attention!

This happened only a couple miles from my house. I routinely see 8-10 Cougars per year in this area simply walking my trap line over a two month time frame. Hunting with dogs is illegal in this part of Washington, the cats are clearly not shy of men. Caught this kit in a bobcat live trap. Quickly released (illegal to harvest a long tailed cat which has been trapped)
