Has anyone had any problems recently entering SA with rifle sound moderators ?

I brought a suppressor/moderator from the USA to RSA in July 2016 without issue. They didn't even look at it at customs on either end.

I'm sure someone else has more recent experience.

I am sitting in Johannesburg airport having had a great two weeks hunting 3 hours drive out of Port Elizabeth. Brought a Sauer 404 in 300 win mag in Peli case with moderator on show in the case no problem bringing it in or taking it out. This same “scare story “ was on one of the U.K. forums I am not sure it’s based on any facts, mods are legal in SA, U.K. do not check for your mod just your rifle serial number same in both Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth rifle and serial number check only. Hope this helps

Just returned 3 weeks ago no issues . US Customs only verified serial # of rifle

What does a sound moderator/Suppressor cost in South Africa?

Not sure about the cost but if you are considering buying one while there I would caution you to do your research before doing so. Aside from the potential legalities which I have no insight on there are a few potential technical gotchas. Most countries other than the US use metric threads. What cartridges are supported is also a consideration. They will have some upper limit on what maximum pressure they can withstand. Some require adapters and may not support a direct thread mount. In any case good luck.

I was just curious .. I am very familiar with suppressors and the thread differences. I am a tool and die maker , over 40 years now.

Cheap top end about $350

I travelled in 2017 with one to rsa Zero problems. I had all the forms but no one ever wanted to see them. I had the federal form and the tax form but didn’t put it on the 4457.

Brickburn is a moderator and reasonably sound most of the time, ask him if he's had any trouble importing himself. lol

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
