416 Rigby on a Brno Zkk 602 action

I have not had internet service for over about 6 weeks so have not been able to get my fix of AH. Interesting discussion around my original topic. Would be nice to know the history of your firearm @Warren Knudsen.

I agree @Neale not sure where it's come from, the past owner did not really know bud did lend it to a friend who took it to the NT and hunted buff there with it.
I fires a couple of rnds through it a week ago and it really was quite pleasant all things considered,

It took some time but I knew I had an old Brno book somewhere,,and I found it As you can see the pictured 602 has the peep sight. The book/ catalouge is from the early seventys. Available calibers are 375 H&H, 358 NM, 458 WM and most importantly AND OTHERS! Indicating that Brno made their 602 in other calibers as well. I’ve been working in the business and know for a fact that if you have very good contacts at some factorys you can have specials made provided large enhough order. I am sure Brittish, German, American wholesellers could order special runs. I am pretty sure this 416 Rigby Brno is factory original and specials in 404, 8x68 and also 300 H&H (I know I’ve seen it somewhere) can be found.

That is some very interesting information, thank you for shearimg

Hello A.V.

The BRNO ZKK 602 brochure is clear about the cartridges their rifle was chambered for. And, "...and others..." could mean that size of the magazine and length of the action is suitable for those "others". I see very difficult the BRNO did not announce, clearly, they could make the rifle for other cartridges.
Plus, the link stug upload https://www.czub.cz/rocenka_en/index.html, published by CZ himself does not shows nothing about the option the factory could produce these first 602 for other cartridges.
Warren's fine .416 Rigby has, undoubtedly, an original barrel. But the bluing is not original. Plus, the ".416 RIGBY" caliber inscription on the barrel was not done by a factory roll stamp, for sure! See the stamping (and bluing) on my 9,3x62 of the same era.
Happy Easter for all.
@Clodo Ferreira my 416 is not a polished rifle, I believe that it is originally chambered in the rigby and but as mentioned it's not a large run, there is no sign of any caliber stamp being removed or the likes, yes it's a unique rifle with an unknown past that I am even more interested to learn about from all of the more experienced people on this sight.

Hi Warren,

I don't want to use the word impossible, but I see very improbable your rifle as a factory done one.
It is very improbable the factory to not use the same type of caliber inscription roll stamp. Not mater a special run, big or small.
And I see the barrel and action as a reblue job. Look at the pictures of my 9,3x62. That is a kind of roll stamp of caliber, polishing and barrel blue/parkerized action of a factory BRNO ZKK of the time.
Anyway, your .416 Rigby seems to be a very good rebore job using an original barrel, perhaps a .358 Norma or a .375 H&H one, of that excelent Poldi Steel!

I'm waking this thread up. I live in Sweden and has been looking for a brno zkk 602 in 458 win mag (to convert to 458 lott, or even better, one that is already converted). After checking all gun trade sites several times a day for 2 years I had only seen two such rifles, one with a built in muzzle break which I don't like and one on an auction that simply went to high. I did fint exactly the weapon in this thread in Norway but it wasn't the caliber I really wanted plus I would have to do the paperwork to import it so I skipped it. Then I found one in Sweden in 416 rigby and decided to go for it. Attaching a pic of the caliber stamp on the barrel. I must say mine stamp looks more "factory style" than the one in this thread.

And here is a pic of the Norwegian rifle that I never acquired. No caliber stamp on the top of the barrel so I guess these 416 rifles are still a bit of a mystery since, at least I, have not seen them in any (old) brno promotion material.

Hello Fredrik,

I am sure your fine BRNO 602 416 Rigby is not a factory one! No one of that era have the receiver polished and blued. And yours has been polished and blued. Just compare it vs. the other you are showing. See the letters.
Best!

That caliber stamp style

looks very much like that on a Zastava made 6mm I recently got on GB. Very similar.

Hi Fredrik,

In the first page of this thread I show how do look the letters and bluing in the front bridge-chamber reinforcement parts in an original early BRNO ZKK 600, 9,3x62 in this case.

Best

Hi Fredrik is that the one at torsbo handels? Because they had a 602 in 416rigby when I was there and bought my 602 in 458Lott. Welcome to AH

My first PH, in Zim., used a BRNO 602 in 416 Rigby. Can't remember if it had the pop up peep or not. I do remember coveting his rifle, and left him my leftover handloads in addition to his tip. I feel very confident that it was factory original.

I have built a custom 416 Rigby based on a BRNO ZKK 602 action and a Lothar Walther barrel. I used a custom mag box and bottom metal that holds 4 rounds. The action has the pop-up peep-site and I fitted a 3- position safety catch as well as many other custom options.
It has a Swarovski 1.5-6 x 42 scope in Talley detachable bases.
I am very happy with the results but I can tell you it wasn’t a cheap exercise!

Beautiful rifle! I have just noticed that 4 rounds fit in your magazine! I notice it doesn't have the indentations that I have in my factory CZ416 that limited magazine capacity to 3 until it was modified.

I hope your rifle feeds and shoots as good as it looks!

Thank you Craig.
It does shoot beautifully!
I have a custom bottom metal made by Duane Wiebe fitted that holds four rounds down. I can load another by partially closing the bolt over the rounds in the magazine and hand loading another round while squeezing the extractor to slip over the rim of the cartridge.
It’s a great caliber!

Hi Jon,

Beautiful working rifle!!! Great! Seems to be one of the earliest ZKKs. What´s the manufacture´s year, whose last two digits are in the left side of the front bridge?

Best!

Hi Clodo
Thank you.
Unfortunately the original stampings/engraving were polished off during the custom build so I’m not sure. I am attaching a photo of the original the original bottom for interest. The donor action was originally from a 458 WM and it has the indentations on the magazine box.
