SON AND I GOT BACK LAST WEEK FROM A TRIP TO NAMIBIA AND RSA. PLEASED TO REPORT THAT 2 TRIPS INTO JNB AND 2 TRIPS EXITING WE WERE NOT HIT UP FOR ANY TIPS, COKE $$, ETC. FOR THE HANDLING OF OUR FIREARMS. MADE FOR A MUCH NICER EXPERIENCE THAN A FEW OF MY PAST TRIPS. GOOD JOB JNB!

Excellent happened once to me in 9 trips with an airline porter that was maybe four years ago

When is a tip a bribe?

I may be part of the problem. I tip porters and others who help me in North America, and I do the same in South Africa. That typically includes the meet-and-greet guy, anyone who helps with the luggage, and sometimes the people in the Firearms Office when they go the extra mile. I don't see any of those as bribes, but if it creates an expectation and a hand out, well, like I said, I may be part of the problem.

A bribe is when the bleeding guy in uniform suggests something “extra” will insure the rifle makes it on the flight. I always tip porters regardless of country.

Hank2211 has a good point. I don’t mind tipping but I know there have been some uncomfortable circumstances at times for many of us.

When the lady in the SAPS office that you turn your gun into for your domestic flight, says "where is my tip to make sure your gun makes its flight." That's not really a tip, but I will call it one, as it's illegal to bribe foreign officials.

When I am pushing the luggage cart and then a "porter" takes it and pushes it to the Intercontinental, and then demands $20 USD for his service, that's not really a tip either.

@SETH RINGER , congratulations on making it thru JNB without a "tip."

THANK YOU, MY POINT EXACTLY. LIKE TO THINK I AM AS GOOD A TIPPER AS THE NEXT GUY. WHEN I THROW A FEW TO THE GUY AT THE FEED STORE HE APPRECIATES IT BUT IT IS NOT A PREREQUISITE TO HIM LOADING THE FEED IN MY TRUCK, NOR SHOULD IT BE FOR OUR FIREARMS TO MAKE IT ON THEIR FLIGHT SAFELY.

No joke, I thought everyone had to go to the small room near the Delta counter where the guy tells you "I'm the guy who will make sure you guns gets on your flight" and then doesn't check your paperwork until you address his statement and hand over a few bucks.
