Thanks again for posting this. I note the following items which I think will be of general interest to members here (note that I'm making some requests of you!):

1. You note that we should not (yet) panic with respect to land confiscation. As you may know, there is another thread here on that issue. PHASA's perspective on this emotional issue is welcome. Please keep us apprised as this plays out.

2. You say in the Parliament Report that PHASA attended the Parliamentary Colloquium in Cape Town on 27 February entitled 'UNLOCKING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF SOUTH AFRICA'S BIODIVERSITY ASSETS THROUGH SUSTAINABLE USE OF WILDLIFE RESOURCES.' In that regard, you say that: "The SA Hunters report was ok except for the fact that they continued to harp on their claim that fences, and captive bred animals are causing harm to South Africa's reputation. " Can you perhaps give us a bit more colour on what you mean by that? Who is SA Hunters?

What is their problem with fences - particularly since fences seem to be the key element in the private ownership of game, and hence the success of the South African model (success defined as more rather than fewer animals and more, rather than less, land being returned to traditional wildlife use)?

What is the issue with respect to captive bred animals? Is this just restricted to lions or does this group have an issue with all captive bred animals?

3. Very much enjoyed the comments on the animal rightists. It is indeed good to see them put in their place. We see that all too rarely.

4. The link to the membership form is not working.

Again, thank you for taking the time to do this. Much appreciated.

Hank thanks for your detailed reply.

1. We will keep everybody posted on a regular basis on any changes or developements on this front .

2. SAHGCA is South African Hunters and Game Conservation Association and is a locally based Association . Their members are mainly local SA hunters.

They support the Extensive Wildlife system but are opposed to Intensive breeding . They have a problem witb all intensive breeding not just related to Lions. They do however also aknowledge that the Wildlife Industry cannot economically survive without it.

3. Thanks !

4. The office will look into fixing the link !

Happy Hunting !

Happy Hunting !!
I was reading this newsletter, and a question occurred to me.

With reference to the Report on the Biodiversity Economy Indaba - East London, you mention that the minister is strongly supportive of hunting, and the sharing of natural resources (wildlife) as part of sustainable use. In many countries, meat from foreign hunters is routinely distributed to local communities, and constitutes an important benefit of hunting from the perspective of local communities. While bird shooting in Argentina, we would stop by a rural school after reaching our daily limit of ducks, and all of the children would rush out and take one or two ducks each, which would find their way into the pot at home. This was an important and welcome "no cost" addition to the local diet.

It is my understanding that the meat from game hunted on private property in South Africa is typically sold by the landowner, as part of the return from hunting.

I realize that South Africa is in a much different economic position that most, if not all, other countries in Africa, but I wonder if there is not something that could be done along these lines to further embed hunting in the eyes of local communities? Would communities even be interested in or care about something like this? Would the cost to landowners in terms of foregone revenue be prohibitive? Is there something hunters could do in terms of perhaps paying an additional "uncharge" and having the meat distributed free of charge?

Or am I out to lunch (so to speak) on this?

Hank the model is definately different in South Africa but also Namibia where it is all or mostly privately owned.

Most cases the meat are sold / swopped at Butcher for other meat like Beef , Chicken ,Pork etc. This is normally part of the basic economics of every outfitter. There are some Provinces where it has bexome a custom for landowners to keep meat.

There are a lot of Outfitters that on their own and through Orphanges , Schools and Churches distribute meat. There is also a very succesful program through PHASA ' Funds Hunters Care program .

I am sure this is something that we could propose to members. We will refer back on this soon ... Thanks for your enthusiasm ! We need more like you !

Happy Hunting !!!
