Anyone ever hunt elk near Craig, CO (GMU 13)?

@Adam S, I had two college roommates that were from Crag and they got me started hunting. I moved from NW Colorado to Montana at a time when drawing special permits was not very difficult, and I was lucky enough to have hunted all of Montana's game animals. In the last 20 years I have also been able to go on many international hunts.

I don't do much of the metal work, but I built 3 muzzle loading guns from kits, and I did build the stocks on many of my centerfire rifles. Most of the big game animals that I have killed were with the rifles that I built, and to me a big part of the satisfaction of my hunts is to be able hunt with the rifles that I built and with my handloads. Even our own Super Moderator, Brickburn, shot his Mozambique Roosevelt Sable with my favorite rifle, the .300 Weatherby that I built.

and it shot like a dream.

@buffybr and @BRICKBURN that is a really cool story! I'm sure using a rifle like that just adds a whole new perspective to a hunt. I enjoy fly fishing and have caught fish on flies I've tied using feathers or fur from animals I've shot, and it makes the whole process more enjoyable. It's great to be able to combine hobbies.

Sounds great but you said you drew October rifle season. You can’t catch your Elk on a fly:)
It isn’t Archery season. That is the he end of August first three week in September. Need to think about shooting the elk with a rifle!

Not a good idea to mention the word CRAIG on this site!!!!!:D

WTF are you talking about?

Coming to Colorado to hunt, you need to be in good shape and please read what Ironhorse375 said about the altitude and hydration!
Have a great hunt! Hunting elk is one of those personal hunts that you either love if you see some, or hate because you don’t.

Ha ha! I'm really good at catching trees on back casts, maybe an elk will be unlucky enough to be behind me wile I'm casting. The great thing about Colorado is fishing is always a great backup plan if I get lucky and tag out early!

It does make using the search feature harder with with all the Craig references lately!

I've hunted several times a few mile north of Hayden. All public land DIY hunts. There are bulls to be had, but you will do better to stick to private land. We hunted lower ground so later in the season was better when the snow pushed most of the elk out of the high timber. As others have said, you will be in the thick of it...

I was in Rangely, CO this week on business. Rangely is west of Craig. The locals I talked to about hunting reported the winter has been fairly mild, so the 2018 hunting season should be good. Right around town, antelope plentiful. When I drove back to Grand Junction, I saw lots of elk around the 20-25 mile mark on Hwy 139.
