J. Alain Smith is the host of Rugged Expeditions, an outdoor travel show which visits exotic locations such as Tanzania, Pakistan and Chad. Following his escape from a dramatic plane crash, Smith realized he needed back-up in case of an emergency in a remote location. He called Global Rescue. “I wouldn’t even think of going to these places without having Global Rescue at our back.”

I met him once and he was a really nice down to earth guy. This in spite of having a big name and money. This was unlike the experience I had with another couple of well known people. Not to say they were real bad just "above me" attitude.

I've had those exact same experiences. I met Alain last year at the Sheep Foundation Grand Opening at their new headquarters outside of Bozeman, MT. I must of talked to Alain for 15-20 minutes, and he was a "really nice down to earth guy."

I've tried to talk to another well known TV hunting celebrity a couple of times at sport shows and he acted like go away unless you want to book a hunt with me.

Exactly or buy one of their books which are priced much higher than Smith's. This had happened to me more than one year. I now own all of Smith's books on hunting and to be honest I had a hard time putting them down once I started reading them. I also like the way he writes......much like he is in person.
To be truthful needing to book a hunt or buying a $50+ book just to get to maybe talk with the person does not cut it with me. I also now look at their TV shows in a different light.
My 2 Cents

I can’t help but chuckle thinking about Alain running around trying to get his gear off the plane!
Glad all was good and a great promo for Global rescue for sure.

I haven't met very many TV hunting celebrities, in fact only Larry Weishuhn and Razor Dobbs, but neither could have been any more friendly or approachable. After chatting with Larry for a few minutes he not only signed my copy of Pear Flat Philosophies at my request but took the time to write a full page personal note. My wife, who had no clue who Razor was, still comments about how nice he was when we met him any time she notices his show on the TV. I'm glad to hear Alain is more in that mold than others, I enjoy his show and look forward to reading one of his books that I recently purchased.

Rugged X is a favourite. Incredible shows. (y) I think I have seen the episode where he is hunting mountain buffalo at lest 3-4 times.

I just wish he was still on TV. Do you know he paid for that show himself and he donated the income from all his books and such to SCI conservation projects.

Wonder what is the rest of the story. It looks like they ran out of runway. Lucky no one was injured.

From what I have heard, he will continue to produce shows, but release them on Youtube. It is an incredible gesture to donate all the income from the books to conservation. (y)

I’ve seen sone including one of hunting buffalo in Australia.
Good viewing actually.
