The anti-hunting influence is on the increase and as everyone knows ethics surrounding hunting is more important than ever. It is therefore pretty sad to discover that one of the most recognized names in the business, Jim Shockey, apparently seems to have been in Sweden filming a hunt on domesticated reindeer and that the show is airing on one of the networks.

No hunter in Sweden with any form of moral compass would hunt these animals and if so they would instantly become the laughing stock of the community. According to a journalistic text in one of the national hunting magazines, it is also questionable whether it is legal due to the fact that these animals are categorized as livestock.

Another case concerning a Hungarian politician has hit the headlines the last couple of days:

Nevertheless, I just wanted to give everyone a heads up so that you do not book any of these hunts without knowing.

PS: For hunting wild reindeer neighboring Norway is a much better choice. :)

@Blue Moon,

Welcome to the AH.com forum as I see you are a new member registered just today...

In reference to your post, I watched the video that you linked and I did see Jim hunting what appeared to be a moose with the aid of dogs....? I didn't see anything about hunting reindeer, domesticated or otherwise. I also assume that hunting with dogs is legal there otherwise, I don't think Jim would be stupid enough to broadcast an illegal activity. I admittedly know very little of hunting Scandinavia, but knowing Jim's reputation very well, I find it extremely hard to believe he would participate in any type of hunt as you describe let alone film and broadcast it.

Possibly, you are confusing this with a high fence or estate type of hunt?? In that instance, I can understand the controversy from possibly anti-hunters, but not necessarily any educated hunters. Animals are raised for hunting purposes behind high fence all over the world. The size of the property and the manner in which the hunt is conducted determines the ethics and fair chase aspect....

In regard to the other link where the politician allegedly shot a reindeer from a domesticated herd, that also sounds a lot like an estate hunt. Granted not all game animals, free range or otherwise, are the ultimate challenge to hunt.... There are many species that can be likened to shooting a "cow in a pasture" under certain conditions. I have shot a few completely wild, unfenced game animals in my day that were of no particular challenge. Not all hunts are created equal, but the backstraps usually taste the same...

Can you tell us a little bit about the dog you have in this fight, or how you came to hear about this story?

Thanks, I thought I would register and alert people of this. This video is only a preview/promo. Yes, hunting moose with dogs is perfectly legal, though not normally executed like in this video. Normally a houndsman would just release the dog without a spotting of an animal. No one hunts reindeer in Sweden because they are domesticated (though free roaming), so whether it is legal for the owners to sell hunts is somewhat of a grey area. This was only recently brought to public attention and no one knew that it was going on. The Sámi people have special constitutional rights to keep their livestock (reindeer) on public as well as private land. The reindeer are earmarked just like cattle by the owners. It is nevertheless not considered fair chase and good sportmansship to hunt these animals.

That is Jim Shockey, and he is hunting, but he not hunting livestock - reindeer or otherwise. The animal does have both antlers and four legs, but the ungulate Jim shot was definitely a European Elk - or as we call it in North America - a moose. Absolutely legal, and with a dog, a very traditional hunt in Sweden.

As you say, the anti-hunting influence is indeed on the increase. Informing ourselves before slandering another hunter is a good way to combat it.

Too many holes and looks like an uninformed, or basis person. Maybe a troll? I may be wrong on troll but I fully disagree about some other statements.
I am done with this worthless thread.

Yes, I know that was a moose. :) But the video is only a promo and the reindeer hunt is not included in that part. I am very familiar with the hunting methods and the animals in this area. Both moose and capercaillie are wild animals, reindeer not.

To be honest, I am a bit offended by being called a troll. I know this area almost like my back pocket. I am sure other Scandinavians will jump in and support my posting. The reindeer hunt (not featured in the preview) in this show is not considered fair chase.

@Blue Moon has been banned. I won't tolerate trolls or people making accusations without support of any evidence.

@Blue Moon,

I don't think anyone here is attempting to be overly critical, but please understand that a post such as yours, especially from new member, reeks of TROLL...! Your reply makes me doubt you are intentionally trolling, but I am curious as to if you are a hunter or not? Are you a resident of Sweden?

I can understand that hunting these free roaming reindeer may be unpopular to some in Sweden and surely horrific to the anti-hunters there.... However, that doesn't make it illegal, or even unethical. From the very little I have seen of caribou and reindeer hunts, they don't seem to be the most timid or the most intelligent animals around humans, making them fairly easy targets. Many non-hunters do not understand that free range and wild does not equate to elusive....

This will not be a platform for trolls or antis.

Just a question. When I was in Alaska I was told that a reindeer was a domesticated caribou. Is this correct? Seems that from the above reindeer are wild, at least in Sweden.

I am relieved. I thought I might get in trouble for suggesting he was a troll. Glad to see I was not the only one. At least he seems anti-hunting. I could see holes in his descriptions but did not want to start a cat fight. Thank you for banning him. I could see little positive things that he would add to the site

@Blue Moon,

Thank you very much for your email to me, I will reinstate you to further this discussion. I apologize for banning you and calling you troll as I assumed what I have seen in the past when someone comes in with their first post being controversial they do tend to be antis in disguise. I am glad that you took the time to write to me and be so respectful as I could understand if you had been upset. I would really like to post your email to me in the thread without your personal information included if you would allow me to. I reinstated your membership status so the conversation and your participation can continue. Sorry for this misunderstanding.

Welcome to AH Blue Moon!

Now, these are Reindeer!

I am probably the one that should apologize for my first post. My intention was not to put Mr Shockey or anyone else in a bad spot (which I probably did), but rather to inform people that there are issues surrounding the hunts that have been carried out. My e-mail was as follows:
"
Hi Jerome,

And congratulations on the success with the forum! I apologize if I entered too harsch into the forum with the thread on reindeer hunting in Sweden, but my intent was to warn people of the offered hunts regarding reindeer. You have of course the mandate to ban me, but it is somewhat difficult to defend the position and put forward information when banned. I am not a troll nor an anti and I am very familiar with the northern parts of Sweden, because I grew up there and still hunt there. The second largest hunting organization has an article on their web site regarding the reindeer hunt that took place with the Hungarian politician.

https://www.jaktojagare.se/kategorier/aktuellt/lyxig-mutjakt-pa-ren-en-anka--20180321/

The last line is the one of the most interest since you asked for evidence and I will quote and translate it: "Alla renar i Sverige räknas som tamboskap och ägarna får inte upplåta jakt på sina renar."

All reindeer in Sweden is considered livestock and the owners are not allowed to offer hunts on their reindeer"

It was unknown for everyone, until just recently when Mr Shockey's show was broadcasted on the Outdoor Channel that hunts on these animals were arranged. Before that no one in Sweden even considered to go on a reindeer hunt in Sweden due to the fact that they are considered livestock.

I again apalogize if I stepped on someone's toes but and I am perfectly fine being banned, but I do not like to be called a troll when trying to put the light on a hunt that in worst case is illegal and in best case unethical. Moose and capercaillies are awsome hunts though and highly recomended, and if you ever want to go hunting wild reindeer Norway is a country that can offer that.

I wish you the best and perhaps it is best that I stay banned, but I would appreciate if you put up the link to the hunter's organization in the thread, because there are issues surrounding these hunts. I also believe that you just like me want all the facts and information to be known so everyone can make thier own decision. Thanks!
