I am going to Namibia in May for a bowhunting trip.
I tried bowhunting last year with no luck so i have done some changes to my set-up for this year.
I am going after Oryx, Warthog, Red hartebeest and a Wildebeest.
I am shooting a Hoyt Powermax 70# and i am using Easton FMJ arrows with Slick trick 125 grain broadheads.
Total arrow weight is 535grain.

Does this sound like it will be an Ok set-up for the animals i am targeting?

senjahunter,

Your set-up will work well on just about any plainsgame animal shy of a buffalo or giraffe. 535 grains of total arrow weight should provide plenty of momentum to give you all the penetration that you need.

Just out of curiosity, you said you had no luck bowhunting last year... Was it because of the set-up you used or lack of shot opportunity?

Your good to go for sure. FMJ and slick tricks have worked well for me so far.

Good luck on your hunt! Hope you will post a report and share some pictures.

Im currently shooting CE Pile Drivers with a total arrow weight of 501gr, but have been thinking about making the switch to the Easton FMJ's..

My bow is set at 67# right now, and I shooting my 501gr sticks.. and I wouldnt hesitate to go after any PG with my rig..

If youre shooting 70# and 535gr I think you will be just fine.. the 328FPS (ATA) on the powermax is pretty smoking too... you should be delivering plenty of energy at reasonable distances and get more than enough penetration with those 125 slick tricks to take down any PG you see..

You have more than enough weapon, the kudu in my avatar was taken with a #60 recurve and 565 grain arrows and had a exit wound with just a fraction of your momentum and KE. Putting the arrows in the right spot is the key! My eland was taken with a Bowtech Assasin at #63 and 450 grain arrows with a good quality coc broadhead and it cut a rib off on entry and stuck through the rib on the off side.

Your set up is fine ....... Good luck and play safe !

Hi while I have not bow hunted in Africa I have been using slick trick 100 gr magnums for Deer last 5 yrs switch from spitfires to the Slick tricks. Love the SLick tricks , all of the Whitetails i have shot with them look like a 12 gauge slug hit them fantastic wound channel . Deer on Long Island are big over 225 lbs. It is an Archery only are so they grow larger Just remember for the bow AMA fps is based on a 30” draw lengh so crono is good idea to see how fast it is shooting.

That setup should get you complete pass through on all those animals! Going to be a killer year!

I was in Africa for the First time, i was originally going on a rifle hunt but i brought my bow also.
I had plenty of opertunities and shot an Impala That we did not recover.
This was a combination of me using a light arrow and a broadhead That was more designed for Nordic game.
I feel like i know my set up better this year and i have used all the advice i got after my hunt last year.

More than enough and the Slick Tricks punch nice holes.

Kudu in my avatar was taken with Easton fmj combined with standard 100 grain slick tricks. I was shooting my 70# 2007 diamond black ice which only has an ibo of 318. So your good to go. I have reduced my draw weight down to 57 lbs the last year and that combo still went cleanly thru a whitetail. The more experienced I get (meaning older lol) the more I realize comfort improves accuracy and that is what really matters.

The three most important things for success bow hunting in Africa are shot placement, shot placement and shot placement.

Look at the shot placement threads on this forum and study the pictures. Aim for the triangle created where the shoulder bones point forward. You don't want to aim behind the shoulder, you want to aim on the shoulder.

perfect setup for plains game...now, you only must do your part

Back home from my Africa trip, it was Fantastic
Managed to trade the planned Red Hartebeest for another animal, as they did not come to the water at this time.
Luckilly for me the next day a massive Kudu came in
The set up worked perfectly, shot straight thru the shoulder og both the Kudu and the Oryx.
Warthog broke the arrow, but it had penetrated to the flerchings so it ran only 60 yards
Hit a little bit high on the Blue Wildebeest so i diddnt Get to mutch penetration but it went straight down in the shot

My First Bowhunting trip was a massive success
And i am going back next year for sure

Got some of the shots on video, Here is a link:
