Just arrived: 375 H&H Mod 70 Alaskan

Wood and Blued Steel, not sure why they named it Alaskan. Here it is:

Door bell just rang, Midway package is here! Time to get the 2-7 Leupold mounted and some rounds loaded, what better to do on a 95 degree day with 61% humidity, a heat index of 115.

They call it "The Alaskan" because it is a remake of the original classic "Alaskan" produced many years ago on the Pre 64 action as you can see with going back to the old barrel ring design.

I came within an inch of buying one with thoughts of turning it into a .375 Ruger but with what it would cost to do so I would be well into custom territory.

Fortunately before losing my mind completely I came across an exceptional barely used M70 classic stainless in 375Ruger for far less.

Congrats on the nice find and here's to many years of good shooting with it.

With deer season finally over, back to the range with the .375 and a clean bore. Bought some Federal 300 gr Woodleigh Hydro Solids to try out, the ammo was on sale and was cheaper than buying the Hydro's as components.

Notice the trend to the left, apparently after each shot the forend worked its way left on the soft front bag. I need to pay more attention. I did shoot one round @ 100 yards with the Magnetospeed attached and the velocity was right at the box velocity of 2500fps.

One other observation, well really two. First, I was surprised at the recoil, much less than I expected. In fact, it felt less than shooting 235gr bullets @ 2700. Second, the 3 shots were done quite quickly and the barrel was just warm. Wondering if the bore-rider design is a factor. I also shot Peregrines out of my 30-06 today and noticed the recoil and barrel heat were both much less than I expected.

Removed the scope and tried to shoot with the open sights. Couldn't see the front sight! The eyes are aging and will have to wear glasses if I want to shoot with the irons.
Very nice and don't worry, as we get older we tend to do such things.

An inch right or left of center is still a very dead animal.

As to the Peregrines, after four decades of loading and shooting other name brand/high end bullets I have gone to the Peregrines exclusively as long as Alliwynn can keep sending them.

I've shot them almost exclusively now since returning from Africa 2.5 years ago and have found them to be the finest, most consistent bullets I've ever used shooting them in a dozen different rifles of a half dozen calibers. Mostly in .260 Rem, 7mm STW, .300wm, and 300 Rum.

I'm waiting on some prototypes in all of those calibers plus a new VLR in .375 they are working on.

Phenomenal performance all around and very good accuracy in all of my rifles both off the shelf and custom.

The 165 gr Peregrines seem to be shooting well in my 30-06, hopefully will get a chance to try some groups this weekend or next. I posted some pics in the small caliber forum.

I need to come up with a better front rest, I've screwed up too many groups as the bag shifts and the forend walks. I don't like to break my shooting position and reset as that is not a consistent way to shoot small groups either. I may make a different front bag to try and avoid the problem...or make it worse!

Been there too. I make my own now out of recycled lead shot bags filled with sand.

A couple laid horizontal, then two laid inline with the rifle and it works great for me.

If needed you can use six to stack them higher.

I also use one that's half filled and sewn in 1.5 strips criss crossing it so I can roll it up lengthwise to get the perfect rear bag fit.

Check your PM's.

Responding to a post that is a few years old but would love to know how you have liked your Model 70 Alaskan in .375H&H. I just got one yesterday.

I just purchased a Winchester Model 70 Alaskan in 375 h@h. I pillar glass bedded it, mounted a Leupold VX 3hd 2.5-8 X wide duplex with Quick release Talley Mounts and Rings. It shoots like a dream, 1 moa with the first commercial load I tried, Federal Power Shock 270 grain…
Might just be my elk rifle until I go the Africa in 2025…….

Thank you and congratulations on your new rifle. If you wouldn't mind, would love to get the product numbers on your Talley mounts. I'm overwhelmed trying to figure out the best bases.

It’s been all over Africa with me from Zim to Moz to South Africa and it will be with me in Cameroon in February.

I’ve taken small and large animals with 300 grain bullets from Serval to Cape Buffalo to Elephant. I’ve used the 250TTSX on plains game from Bushpig to Impala on up to Eland. Great rifle!

Though my 375 is the Safari model 70 and heavy, I thought that since it was my first at a bigger weapon the weight would be good. To do over would buy the Alaskan with the lighter barrel. The 250grain Barnes TTSX is my favorite load.

I have a Model 70 Safari Express in .458WM and a Model 70 Alaskan in .375H&H. I love them both but very different rifles. The Alaskan is noticeably lighter.

I just called Talley and they set me up with the correct mounts, the front mount has an extension so I could mount the tube correctly. On about 20 of my rifles I had used Leupold QR mounts and rings and never had a problem. However, I have converted everything to Talley mounts and rings because I think they are superior, IMHO……[

Just received a new in box Winchester Model 70 Alaskan!

First impressions:

1. Wow is this thing light! 7lb 12 oz light according to my digital fish scale.

2. Wood is pretty decent

3. Two cross bolts, they have a pattern on the ends, nice touch.

4. Fit and finish looks to be very good, nice wood to metal fit and bolt is pretty smooth right out of the box.

5. 25 inch barrel doesn't feel out of place

6. Made in Portugal by Browning Viana

Powder Valley box showed up the door, 100 pieces of Privi brass, 4 boxes of 235 gr Speer bullets and 4 boxes of 250 gr TTSX! One more box from Midway due tomorrow with scope bases and a few other items, I should be ready to roll out a few loads by tomorrow night!

Was filling out the paperwork at the gun store and my wife was with me, she turns and says "guess you need to get a scope for this one too?"!!! Going to use a heavy duplex 2-7x33 Leupy I have until I figure out what scope I'm going end up with.

Will try to get a picture or two posted soon.

What a lucky man with a wife like that & a new mod 70 375.

I got mine recently, Internet order. I love it compared to the safari express. I plan to pillar bed the stock, barrel cut to 21.5”, banded front swivel, banded front sights, cerakote BA ‘’graphite blk’’, then I want do a supergrade rear swivel and I’ll possibly delete the front post and maybe put a silver oval or something to delete the hole (still kicking that around)… what I am excited about is, to my taste, I ended up with a really nice stock…I’ve seen supergrade stocks with less figure…again, my taste but thought ya’ll might enjoy.
