Is anyone going to be at Houston Safari Club? If so will there be an AH get together?
Thanks

Matt

I am actually moving from Lagos to Houston in mid January and have discussed w/ @tarbe about meeting him and a few other AH folks and going to the HSC expo. It has moved from the Woodlands to the downtown convention center.

Yes sir. I will be exhibiting with Henry From Henry Griffiths Safaris. We would like to get together with anyone who will be there from AH.

One was organized in 2017 but nothing yet for 2018 so you are welcome to put an AH Get Together in Houston if you wanted, that would be great and you can do so in this thread. (y)(y)

So if anyone is interested please reply here. Also if anyone is familiar with Houston and knows a good spot to meet up please let us know.
Henry and I will be in booth 551. Feel free to stop by.

Matt

I will be going to the show. If there is an organized meet that would be great. Sorry I can't offer to organize one, my work schedule is unpredictable.

Most likely not going, but the lobby bar of the Hilton would be a good meeting spot that’s conveniently located.

Only plan I have is being there. It is at the GRB this year correct? Should be much better!
Yes sir! George R Brown Convention Center. Our first year at the new venue! The Hilton that is attached to GRB via walkway will be hosting all after hours HSC functions. I'm sure there is a bar there that can be used as a meeting place. Hopefully we can gradually grow this one like the DSC Get-together. We'll be staying at the Hilton, thru the convention. Unfortunately, well also be tied up with the dinners each night. During the day I'll be helping out at Grant's, Mashambanzou Safaris booth. #1050. Hopefully everyone will stop by to say hi.

Alright gents, since the flu got in the way of DSC for me, I decided to run over to Houston. I'll be staying at the Hilton right by the show. Look forward to meeting up.

The flu kept Kathy away from DSC, so she has some shopping to do at HSC!

I have three more doses of Tamiflu to take (yes, I brought the flu home from DSC) and should be 100% by the time HSC opens.

I can see HSC eventually (almost!) rivalling DSC now that the venue has been improved!

Im trying to figure out how to get to Houston this year.. Im pretty sure I'll just day trip down from Dallas and try to be there most of Saturday, and then will drive back home..

If you guys come up with a time/date/location let me know. I'd love to link up with a few of you.

I actually hope that doesnt happen..

I spoke to several exhibitors at DSC that have been also attending the Houston show for a long time.. every one of them expressed a concern over this..

What they told me was that while DSC is great, and they get to see a ton of people, etc (they love the DSC show).. that Houston offered a more "intimate" setting and was less busy.. which allows them to spend more time with potential clients and work out the details of potential hunts, etc (they love Houston too)..

They also felt like there was a lot less competition, and that they could rely on "old friends" for referrals, etc. at Houston.. where thats not quite as easy at the big shows like DSC and SCI...

For example.. one of my friends owns a outfitting business in Wyoming.. for the last few years their company has been the only rocky mountain outfitter that specializes in world class mule deer that has had a booth in Houston... They have a lot of long standing, happy customers in Houston and are friends with several of the other vendors that set up booths there too.. so when they set up at the show, they always get several direct referrals.. If someone is asking about rocky mountain mule deer opportunities.. they get brought to their booth either by prior customers or by other outfitters that know that mule deer is what they specialize in.. and then they return the favor when someone comes to their booth and mentions something like moose, gold medal fishing, new zealand stag, etc..etc..

I got the impression that many of the companies that have a long history of showing in Houston are a little bit apprehensive about the change, and have been really happy with the way things have been in years past..

Most I talked to seemed hopeful that "bigger" would ultimately be "better".. but.. they werent exactly excited about having to wait and see if that was going to be the case either..

Seems like with Houston being the 4th largest city in the country, and full of hunters, it was just a matter of time before the Houston show changed venues and broke out.

I'll be glad if we can end up with a world-class show that I can attend while sleeping in my own bed for once! :)

I got spoiled with the Houston show being one exit from my house. I'll be making the trip to GRB for sure though.

I volunteered for the club for a couple days. Don't know what they'll have me doing yet. I think I'll work Thursday for setup and whatever they need Friday. So if you see a bald guy with glasses and a beard and looks like he's lost - that'll probably be me. Come say hello!

From my understanding, Houston moved the date to make it easier for outfitters that go to SCI to add Houston in order to grow the show. I am not sure even with the change that’s it’s going to make a difference in the short term (10 years). DSC is just too big and established, adding a chapter system and getting bigger. And too close to Houston.
