I'm going to get a point and shoot pocket camera to go along with me to Tanzania this coming summer. I will be taking a DSLR but want a pocket camera too. I have read all the old threads I could find but didn't come across anything too recent. What are you using in the field?

I am a bit of a camera junkie - but the new I-Phone cameras are an incredible technology. I carry a quality mini-DSLR (Nikon) in my vest pocket, but the shots I took with the I-phone were, for the most part, just as clear and easy to manipulate for cropping or enlargements as the DSLR exposures. The one place they are inferior is low light where the small lens can't cope.

Sony has some small pocket cameras that take great pictures for the 100.00 range, have carried the same one for the last three trips and have some great quality photos...a no brainier to operate..point and shoot. Lost a camera on my first trip, losing a 100.00 camera in Africa is, to me, a better alternative than risking the loss of my I Phone. I carry the camera in a small case on my belt, always handy to grab in a hurry when you are bouncing around in the back of a Bakkie. Sony DSC 830. 20 megapixel.

My wife is what I consider a semi-professional photographer. She seconds the Sony line. Look at the DSC-H300\B 20.1 megapixel and 35X optical zoom. Wal-mart for $199.

RL, you are a junkie in many fields....that's why your posts are usually so interesting, along with a few others here!

For a pocket camera, I carry a Canon Powershot SX720HS, on a small case in my belt, 40X.

A larger Canon is in my backpack.

I am another one for the I Phone.

I have been through several pocket sized point and shoot cameras over the years of different makes and models. At the end of the day my I phone 7 takes just as good pictures, and is easier to edit and share the pics. It's water and shock resistant and fits in my front pocket. If I need more zoom or better quality for some reason I get out the big camera, but that seems to happen less and less frequently these days.

Three cameras come along
In the pocket:
iPhone
Panasonic Lumix dmc-zs50

Then the big white gun. Canon DSLR for the tough stuff.

The Sony Cyber Shot I purchased for my Africa trip did a great of picture taking, As Good as my cell phone is a picture taking I'm sure I'd want to take it into the field

I have a Nikon Coolpix and it seems to have a blue tinge to all my pictures. I don’t know if I’m setting the camera wrong or what. When it comes to cameras I’m still stuck on a 35 mm film camera

+1. The zoom is phenomenal. Only downside is it doesn’t like dirt when it falls out of your pocket while low crawling through a warthog hole in the fence.

A good dust proof case is a must in Africa.

By the way, what are you doing crawling through a warthog hole, you might find yourself face to face with a nice puff adder :E Horrified:

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I'll look at your suggestions!

Following the damn warthog. Lol. Believe me I was very cognizant of where I was going, I am not a friend of snakes in the least.

Hi Bob,

I am using the Olympus TG I since 2012. This series of the Olympus, is as tough, water proof to 40ft and with great optics, better than most other brand of the same size and features. Now the serie is on the TG 5.
This is a link where the Olympus TG4 is compared wiht the TG5

Good luck!!

I used my iPhone on 2 trips. Indispensable. One less piece of gear to take PLUS I was able to post to FB & do email with my work place...

I have been looking at the Panasonic cameras pretty hard, I like the super zoom and RAW features. I have been going back and forth between the LUMIX ZS50 and the LUMIX DC-ZS70K. I pretty sure I'll get one or the other of these, just have to decide which one.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
