How exactly does one hold a suck gun? :)

Not sure on gun weight, I know Dave said it was about a 1/2 lb heavier than your average .470.
 
Haha, sorry, just caught that....

Pull the gun hard into the pocket of you shoulder with the hand on the pistol grip. Be sure it is not against bone. Get your cheek down solid onto the stock. You want your upper body and head to be as tight to the gun as possible so you move with the gun rather than the gun slapping you. Then push away with the off hand to stabilize the gun.

I shoot my .40 cals and 505's in this manner, often in a T shirt. Actually tend to get beat up less than in winter with a thick coat on. I think it is jyst because my guns fit me better without thick clothing. I really think it comes down to proper fit.

Where it gets me is in the lower back where the recoil rocks me back. Of course if your shooting from a bench, you have to be sitting very upright, not the typical hunched down over the gun position. Workung on my own range now, but the membership one i user to go to had some high benches with stools, i woukd use a chair with them for big bores. This is where i like standing with sticks, even if with two sets.

Yep this is basically what I do, but I'll admit my focus was at least if not more so on the sights as my hold. I don't know what it was, but I was really nervous handling the rifle, I guess perhaps because it wasn't really mine at the time, still isn't till I pay Dave. But I know I was also concentrating on not doubling or doing anything else stupid.

Congratulations, to both AZDAVE and PHOENIX PHIL; obviously two VERY happy gentlemen. I've wondered about the B SEARCY doubles; they seem to be a rifle with a great reputation, but without the pain in the pocket. Definitely form and function. Again, congratulations!!!!
 
Good evening. Phil and I came to an agreement and he is the proud owner of a nice 470NE. Phil and I have spoke about doubles for a few years and I knew he was very interested. I had done some horse trading and had the 450/400 to 577 doubles covered in spades. Phil has always helped folks out here on the site, gave good advice, and treated everyone with fairly. He earned my respect. I couldn't think of a more deserving man to have this double. We will get together in the next year and shoot doubles and I will help him on working up loads that regulate to what the rifle likes. I also look forward to seeing a picture of him with his first buff with a double(y) As I owe a picture to Cal of the first kritter that gets in my way when I have the 577 in my hands. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Dang, it was only a few weeks ago when I was considering investing in Past recoil pad stocks and Testosterone supplements :A Whistle:
 
In all seriousness....I’ve tried most recoil reducers as I used to shoot a LOT from the bench. One year I patterned 23 different turkey loads, most being 3.5 inch 12 ga. Those kicked more than my 375...literally brought tears to my eyes.

The best recoil reduction from a bench is good bags full of play sand, a pad or flat bag for your elbow, and a 25# bag of lead shot between the butt and your shoulder.

I can shoot almost anything in that combo for hours. No pain, no bruising, nothing.

No lead sled needed...just a bag of shot.
 
Congrats on your new Double, once the last check is handed over I would address gun fit. Remember this DR was made for someone else and proper gun fit will help mitigate recoil and make the gun yours.
If you cannot visit Butch Searcy, Phoenix is blessed with more than it's share of great gun smiths. Finding a good stock man should be easy and he will adjust the LOP, cast and pitch all making the gun quick to point and easier and more comfortable to shoot.
If you are a hand loader I suggest look into reloading reduced loads using either Trail Boss or IMR 5744, they will increase your enjoyment and time with your new DR. Even reloading using the 75% rule will reduce felt recoil..

The plan at the moment is to visit Butch between Christmas and New Year's. He will be doing what it takes to put a Trijicon RMR on it. I'm not too concerned with fit, but certainly can get Butch's take while there.
 
Without a doubt that is a nice looking rifle. While not as fancy as the majority of double rifle offerings the fit and finish look great. I agree that "fancy" doesn't make a rifle shoot any better. This will serve your double rifle needs for many years to come. Congratulations.

Way to go Phil....and yes, Dave has a habit of making guys on AH some pretty sweet (and irresistible) deals!

Now you need to think about how you are going to put that rifle to its intended use. :)

When I was trying to sort out getting to the AH dinner (ost Important) an the Dallas Show I had plans to make an appointment to visit the Hon Mr Searcy. In the meantime I occasionally check out his website as much in dreams as anything else One day . . .
