Deer hunting from a ground blind, with limited visibility, is the ultimate test of whether or not you can be happy with yourself and occupied by leaves falling, birds chirping and squirrels bounding in the leaves - or have a lack-of-technology meltdown. I am proud to report that I survived for 6-hours this morning without my cellphone and Ipad.

(y), I envy you.

It's hard way to deer , but productive. Forrest

Your safari's are undoubtedly more memorable!

Hard to argue that, but I haven't been in the woods here at home for a few years now. And too damn busy at work to even chase quail on the weekends.

I certainly get it. My favorite part of the experience is getting to the stand in dead dark and waiting for the woods to come alive...deer or no deer.

One of my few original sayings is "anybody can get up early enough to see a sunset"

We arrived at our areas the previous day as the sky was becomming light. My expert deer-hunting buddy suggested that we arrive earlier. Today, the sky was just transitioning out of darkness and the woods were utterly quiet once I settled into my blind. Yesterday, jst after settling-in, I head squirrels chattering away nearby and my buddy told me that they would "rat out" a dear. New to deer-calling, I tried the fawn distress call on my new deer call, and shortly to my amazement, I saw the head of a doe about 10-yards away peering around a tree at the edge of a thicket about 19-yards away. My first blind is very small and getting my rifle out the window made the deer nervous and I played follow-up with my sight that I had the foresught to turn on the illuminstion - but did not have the 3-9 sight at minimum magnification. Such is life.

I've never owned or to my knowledge ever used a cell phone. We had a dial phone until the phone company would no longer use the system and forced, I say FORCED us to get a tone phone. I refused to get Prodogy because the advertisements consisted of several people claiming that "you gotta get this". To which my answer was I don't gotta do anything. So my "escapes" to the woods are not quite so traumatic, but I do enjoy a walk in the woods with the most technological piece of equipment being a toss-up between my binoculars (1949 B&L) and my rifle (1953 M70), unless I'm after upland birds in which case it's a 1910 Parker 16 ga. That's not to say that I don't enjoy technology, particularly being able to put the key in the ignition of the '86 F350 and easily cover in minutes the amount of mileage that it took hours on foot.

Six hours without your technology. Wow!!!

Guess I would have the bends. I can go up to ten. ....,

Minutes !

I have an acre in the middle of town with a screened in back porch facing east. When it’s 45F or above (usually wrapped in a blanket), I sit and have my morning coffee while my old dog chases the rabbits out of the yard. Watching the sunrise and listening to the birds and squirrels waking up is always a pleasure!

To be honest it was nicer in September sitting in front of the fire at PawPrints in South Africa watching the sun rise into a clear sky.

Spent two days on the deer stand in Arkansas this weekend and it was wonderful.

I have a lever action Winchester .30-30 that I am expressly fond of hunting with in the woods. Usually have a book in my day pack and enjoy being unplugged and sort of carefree

Living life like a lion for 1 day is better than living life like a jackal for 100 years.
