My Buffalo Rifle

Nice rifle! I can vouch that the 416rem will put buff and other big critters down no problems. 400gr swift A frames and 400gr barnes solids at 2500fps will do the trick. If you are a handloader and have a chronograph run both bullets at the same velocity and they will shoot pretty much to the same POI at 50 and 100yds. The barnes solids will need less powder and be a very compressed load. word of caution work up to that velocity and see if your gun can handle the pressures without stuck case issuses and test them in the heat of the day too.
That is one HUGE red stag in your avatar! NZ?

This is my CZ made .404 that I used to take the buffalo in my avatar. I had them add some options like a pop up peep sight. Very accurate rifle. I've since purchased a .470 double K gun to use on my next hunt.

I've never been to Africa, I'd hope to acquire a fine double before I hunted cape buffalo. But for now, my only dangerous game caliber is a Winchester M70 Safari Express .375 H&H Mag. It is a humble gun, but I'm very proud of the rifle. I'd hope to use it on plains game safari. And as a second gun to a double on a buffalo hunt. It is topped with Talley quick detachable rings and a Sightron 2-10x32mm. I'm still on the recovery from a back surgery, and the .375 sits new and unfired with three boxes of Barnes TSX' ready when I am. I hope it shoots true.

If you've seen one factory M70 SE, you've seen them all. But since this is a picture thread...

Shootist43,

I would favor the 500 Schuler and the Jeffery double if I was making a trip in the near future.

Zephyr,

That is a real nice Gibbs in a wonderful classic cartidge

Nothing humble about that rifle! It's one of the best on the market. Any more money spent would simply be on pretty wood to get scratched up in the field.

i forgot to post a picture, this is my cape buffalo with my AHR 505 Gibbs. the rifle is sold now and im replacing it with a Heym model 89 in 500 NE.

the 505 gibbs held 3 rounds in the magazine but its a big cartridge in a relatively small action so the magazine was a bit sensitive when full loaded. if you had three rounds down and operated the action with any real force it would dislodge an extra cartridge. at first i was a little upset but after handling 3 other rifles built on the same CZ 550 magnum action i realized this was how they all were. to prevent the risk of magazine issues i kept the rifle with just two cartridges in the magazine at any given time. if you truly wanted a 3+ round magazine you would need a custom action ($$$$$).

that AHR was a fantastic rifle and it will be missed!

Nice buffalo and rifle! Where did you hunt?
Just recently hunted him in August with KMG safaris up in Limpopo. I see your a Georgia resident. Just bought a house in Acworth, planning to move down in 2 years.

I know I recognized your buff from his website. I though he ran a great outfit.

Yes I don't remember his name either, but I agree he was my tracker too. Originally from Zim he also worked for Ivan Carter. He thinks like a buffalo!
