Shooting a 416 Rigby

I was in a similar situation to you stepping up from a 375 to a 416 Rigby. This is what helped me :)
- Stay off the bench until you have to0
- Use open sights or long eye relief scope it will allow you to focus on shooting and not have the thought of Weatherby eyebrow in the back of your mind!
- Take a few guns- one of which is a .22. Fire a few rounds then go back to the .22 i found this helps with trigger/ breathing control and also a cheap option whilst waiting for the barrel to cool.
- Fit a good recoil pad I upgraded mine and its a lot better.
- We shoot a competition called Big Game rifle and shoot matches like charging animal 6 shots in 30s at 100m,50m 25m then this helped me you tend to focus more on getting shots off and not on the recoil- ironically I tended to shoot the 416 better than the 375!

But most of all HAVE FUN! They are a great calibre and enjoy it! I call mine the smile maker because everyone that fires always has a massive smile on their dial after shooting it!

The CZ is at the house. Have to clean it and get some ammo, dies ect. The rifle feels good, front sight bead seems alittle small. Trigger feels good, action is alittle choppy. Need to work it a bit. Thanks for all the advice
 
I also purchased a CZ550 in 416 Rigby. I had a lead sled I used for my 300 win mag prior to hunting PG in Namibia 2013. The 416 Rigby packs a wallop for sure and all things being different you will find what best fits for you. After I was comfortable shooting off the bench with the sled I found a remark that said three things not to do. 1. don't shoot off the bench, 2. don't shoot off the bench and 3. don't shot off the bench. By that time I had shot over 200 rounds down range. I began to sh0ot standing up then incorporating homemade sticks into the works. It's most likely what you will be doing anyhow. I found that synch in, lean in, feet shoulder width apart with my right foot slightly back allowed me to use my whole body (6' 2" 280 lbs) to absorb the recoil. If your looking to incorporate a fixed scope, get the rings specifically y made for the CZ. The CZ550 has a notch that the rear ring has a "finger" if you will that will slip into that notch and with sufficient torque wont come loose. My two cents, hope it helps. I haven't shot it for a while, dusting off my 300 WM for a hunt in Namibia 2018.

I don't have plans for a scope at all for this rifle. Maybe a receiver sight? I will remember CZ specific rings thanks. I was handling the rifle outdoors and couldn't figure out why my eye seemed off. The fixed and two folding leaves of the rear sight are not symmetrical. The right side is higher than the left and becomes more pronounced as leaves are flipped up that it was a rush job. The white stripe is off center. Didn't notice any of this at the gun shop. Think I'll call CZ and see if I can get a replacement. Thanks for the shooting tips. Gun show this weekend ill see what I can pick up, maybe dies, ect or a box of ammo to get a few rounds down range before heading back to work.
 
Finally got around to shooting. The CZ was more comfortable than the Ruger I fired. Didn't shoot any paper targets just shooting at a few random sage brush about 50 yards out. Used Hornady 400 gr DGX as they are cheapest to get me shooting and familiar with the rifle. Recovered 2 in the wet dirt hillside. One had zero penetration just sitting there in plain sight. The other was a few inches in the dirt. Weigh 263 gr, expanded to about 7/8" nearest I can measure. So far I'm happy. Just need to get stocked up and reloading now.

Many find the CZs more comfy to shoot than Rugers. Most likely due to stock design/build as the Rugers actually tend to be heavier if I recall the weights of my rifles correctly.
 
Took my RSM 416 out during a pheasant hunt. Let my friend shoot the rifle. First big bore he has ever shot. Like a pro. Video to follow
 
John J, if you can handle the Hornady factory loads you will be OK. They are brutal. Kick harder and sharper then my home loads yet my home loads are 100 to 200fps faster. I use 98 grains of AR2209 behind the 410 Woodleigh Weldcores and 400grain Hydros.
