Starting my 98 build

Youve inspired me @Shawn.54 .. Im about to start another mauser build myself.. but am going in a completely different direction than you are..

I picked up a severely beat down Spanish 1916.. nothing on it is worth keeping except the action.. the barrel is pitted, the stock is cracked, etc.. but I was able to grab it for less than $100.. its certainly not worth attempting to restore... its in way too bad of shape..

It was originally chambered in 7x57.. but is one of the re-barrel jobs the Spanish Guarda Civil did back in the 50's and 60's when they converted about 60,000 of their rifles to 7.62x51.

Im going to take it back to 7x57, drop in some "modern parts" (timney trigger and timney low mount safety, green mountain barrel, etc..).. find a decent stock to fit to it, have the bolt polished and the bolt handle re-forged so that it will clear an optic, tap the receiver for scope mounts.. and try to make a nice deer rifle out of it..

Im sure Ill end up putting a good bit more money and a whole lot more time than if I were to just go out any buy a used but in good condition Win 70 in 7x57.. but I figure it will be a fun project..

I had a ton of fun with my last mauser salvage (BRNO VZ24 that was in desperate need of a re-birth)..

It is a challenge to do it yourself but if you take your time it can be rewarding too have fun and good luck. For a good stock check Boyd's they have laminate and wood stocks that are almost drop in.

I used a boyds laminate on my last mauser project (the BRNO VZ24)... It worked out great.. other than having to cut out a small relief for the bolt handle that we turned down, it was a perfect drop in.. Im considering boyds again for this one.. Ive had great luck on every rifle I have re-stocked with one of their products.. (a Winchester 1890, Winchester 70, 2x Ruger Americans, and the VZ24)..

Well it's been a month since I gave an update. I have been busy with non gun projects and waiting for a barrel.

Tomorrow should be ten weeks for my 8-10 week wait so I expect a call or email soon it's killing me.

View attachment 181313 View attachment 181314 Next will be opening bolt face next week after I look around and see how others do it. And I remembered I had this piece of wood in a closet total cost so far $100. Forty for action sixty for stock at least 15 years ago.

Just a question; after machining the bolt, will it bind?

Just curious as I might built one using a Mauser 98 action.

Dr Ray the only machining on bolt was to open bolt face to accept 404 J case head original face was for 30-06/8mm
diameter. And I took .002-.003 off face to true it up was a lot of wear on face if you look at face you can still see shadow of primer in face.

Little update I just got off the phone with Pac-Nor my first barrel did not pass inspection so a second has been started. It my be 2-3 weeks until it's done.
So I have more time to wait that's my luck.
At least it didn't get shipped with a defect.
Waiting patiently

Can't really complain about that level of service!

Yea it's a good thing but I'm not going to have a stock left I will slowly turn it to dust with 0000 steel wool if I don't get something else to work on. LOL
I'm like a kid the week before Christmas.

can't wait to see the next instalment

Well I just got off the phone with Pac-Nor my barrel is being chambered today needs crowned and polished and should ship by end of the week.
Hope it passes final inspection.

No it spent two day wondering around Oregon and Northern California back into Oregon sat in Portland for 14 hours now is moving again. I'm going to overload UPS's computers checking the tracking every 15 minutes or so.
They gave me the 27th as delivery date that a week and a day should be here before that I hope.
Shawn

Well I got up today and my barrel is on truck out for delivery so I should have it at my house by the time I get home. Pics to come later.
Now the problem is my wife is home from work and will catch the delivery so
I'm busted. It's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
She knows I'm building a rifle and is pretty cool about it she will use it for leverage against me later. $$$$
