I am considering trying for a Vaal Rhebok on my trip to South Africa. I have heard that they are a very tough animal to hunt. I am interested in hearing some stories on hunting them

Who are you hunting with? That will be a big factor. What is there success on previous hunts? What type of quality do they deliver on their Vaal Rhebuck hunts?

These are big questions that need answering before taking on the notorious Vaalie.

I'm no expert, but I have taken one. The Vaalies are known for liking it up high in the mountains and are hunted there. But just like elk in the American west, if there's no food or water, they must move to it. The ram I took was caught in the middle between way up high and at the very bottom of the valley. Bad luck for him, good luck for me. He was on the move to down low to where there was food and water. As it turned out, 5 or 6 of his buddies had already made it to the bottom. We saw them shortly after we loaded him up.

They're a neat trophy with hair a bit like a rabbits. Up high where it's colder they need the insulation.

Just like Marius said I depends on the outfitter more than anything in most hunts. I can tell you he had me on one within the first hour of looking for them with a easy shot. We waited hunted a bit more and got a very nice one day 2
They are a challenging animal to hunt because of the terrain and there eyesite. Good luck on hunting them

I got one pretty easy they came running over a mtn top while we were after a diff species and the PH said shit thats a big one and they are rare shoot it. I didnt even know WTF it was just that I know my PH and if gets excited and calls shoot I always comply!!! It was kinda like a 3 stooges shoot as they were jumping all over the damn place and he said shoot the one right there I said wtf which, then the one on the left then they mixed up then the right. Finally the big one broke left running by himself and I locked on and dumped him at about 200 yds.
We knew they were around and the property owner also had one left on permit. So ask about that as I think the landowner needs them on quota and permit. It was a no fence place they had oribi and I could have shot multiple but no more permits did they have on quota so they wouldnt let me. Bummer.

Depends where you hunt them.
I have hunted the with rifle and bow. I have taken three, two Rowland Ward. The third I did not measure.

Spot and Stalk is a great challenge.
It is a cross between Antelope and Bighorn Sheep hunting.

I will be hunting with 3S Safaris my PH will be Hennie Van Jaarsveld and we will be hunting somewhere between Grahamstown and Fort Beaufort. I am not going specifically for Vaal Rhebok. I've just considering trying for one because I've read they can be a challenging animal to hunt.
Thanks everyone for sharing some awesome stories

Enjoy your hunt. They can be a great challenge.

They are a tough hunt and live in rough country. I got mine with Leopards Valley Safaris in July. It was cold!!!! They are very cool animists and have rabbit like fur.

Hope you get to go after one! I hope to someday as well!

If you have interest in them I would defiantly discuss going after one. Mine is still fresh in the salt and just getting over the plane trip back as I type

I agree with Ernie they can be tough to hunt especially around the area you are planning on hunting, I hunted that area last year and got a nice one, be prepared for long shots at crazy angles.
Have fun and I hope you get one.

Looks like a very nice Vaal Rhebok Uintaelkhunter. Who were you hunting with? Did you measure his length? They are also on my wish list. Someday.... Bruce

We hiked many miles this one we actually spotted then drove around the mountain and hiked over the top to come down in on them at a bit over 300 yards with the wind howling

You can always try spot and stalk with the bow!
