Good day All
Leaving for Zambia in 36 hours for my first DG hunt for Cape Buffalo. For some reason this feels different than any of the other hunts I have been on and not a hundred percent sure why.
I've done my homework, from reading many books on shot placement, endlessly watching YouTube videos on Cape Buffalo hunting, to shooting a couple hundred rounds of .375 H&H off the sticks from various positions(that went to crap a few weeks ago but I've worked through that thanks to the help from the guys here on AH). I won't be using my own firearms this time but I don't think that will be an issue. The only thing is I haven't been doing is walking the bush much after being an idiot and getting blisters a couple weeks ago (they have pretty much healed up now).
I've even contemplated taking up drinking to help with the jitters.:D Beer Bottle:
I am pretty sure I am ready and things will settle down once I am there but...
I am still up in the air on taxidermy if I am lucky enough to shoot a buffalo.
Thanks

Your embarking on a DG hunt in a really awesome location, jitters would be expected!! I think you will be fine once you get there and instinct will kick in, best of luck!!

Are you hunting in the Luangwa Valley?

Best of luck!!

I always have some blister cushions with me on trips where I plan on doing a lot of hiking or playing soccer. I like them becuase the are latex and I can wear the in the shower and they still hold for several days.

It feels different because it is different. Both because of DG, and the wild area (assuming wild since Zambia) that you'll be hunting. the hunt will change you and your perspectives I'll bet. It did for me. Enjoy every second!

doing a big 5 hunt I think makes most guys get some jitters. I know you will be fine and have one heck of a hunt.

Just to help you out I thought I would help with some taxidermy ideas to get you thinking. wall mount, ped. mount or even life size to pick from. I hope I helped.:sneaky:;)

Good luck.

Enjoy sir! I cannot wait to hear your tale.

Note that many fail to realize the role socks play in causing/preventing blisters. Make sure they are good quality material with very smooth material on the surface that contacts your feet.

I should have known better NO SOCKS in Gum boots on a humid day. :Banghead: I thought we were supposed to get smarter with age?

Yes sir
With Mbizi, I had been planning on a Cape Buffalo hunt in 2018 but they had an offer here on AH that I just couldn't pass up.

I remember that deal!! Glad you took them up on it, I'm jealous!

Thanks @billc as if I didn't have enough to keep my mind busy. One question though that you may be able to answer. if I do get lucky is this something I can put off until I get back home?

There are many dangers in that valley -- the buffalo of course, leopards, lions, crocodiles, hippos, murderous elephants. However, none of those are threats at the moment and projecting into the future does not give you anything to take action on. Save your energy. You and your PH will have control over most if not all the things that might happen. Relax and enjoy. You are going to get memories that few are privileged to touch. I hope you can focus on that. Looking forward to your report!

Love Zambia and the Luangwa Valley. Shoot straight, don't fall into the river, use pliers to kill the tsetses :) Best of luck!

Best of luck to you! I've 31 days left myself before my first buffalo hunt and I'm feeling the same way. I think I'm starting to drive my wife nuts with the amount I'm taking about the trip at home.

For sure you can wait till later to decide. Just remember you can not change your mind once you tell them no just a skull mount unless you want to buy a cape later. I would tell you since I figure a life size mount is out of the question to have them skin it for a ped mount as that will give you enough hide for a ped or shoulder mount. You don't pay for skinning so your not out anything extra. Then either have cape and skulled dip/packed and sent home or decide before shipping if you only want skull. I myself would have cape and skull sent home for the little extra that will cost and decide later after thinking about it.

I think a buff screams ped mount to me. Those mounts are all from kanati taxidermist and what I think are some of the best I have seen. All have that look of I will kick your ass the buff have.

You'll be just fine. I leave in 9 day's for my Buffalo hunt in Limpopo. I too get a little anxious on leaving for any of my hunts. This is my second DG hunt and I have full confidence in my PH on every level. Look forward to your report and pictures!

And I thought this was going to be a thread about dogs!
