Airline Approved Gun Cases

Lots of them out there. SKB and Pelican are two of the most popular and durable. Just make sure whichever model you choose either has integrated locks or a way to lock it with a normal padlock of some kind.

Oh ya, each airline may have its own restrictions. Size/dimensions, etc.
 
This has been hashed over here a few times :) There are many cases that may be approved but I would not trust some of them for this. Tuf Pak and Pelican seem to always be the most popular among travelers. For the simple flat, hinged lid type, Pelican has been around a long time and is usually the one against which other similar designs are judged.

I always take just one bolt rifle (Win 70-98 Mauser type). I take it down and use the Pelican 1700 short case. I use the full thickness foam that is available from Pelican and cut out the holding cells for each "half" of the rifle. This case is handy, short, has wheels and can be carried like a big brief case if needed. There are two holes for locks- I've always used two locks so that resolves the issue of having to fill all holes with locks. The shortness of this case is easier for everyone to handle and is inherently stronger and more rigid than the longer cases. Never had an issue with this case for intl travel. I "witness mark" each action screw head location at correct "tightness" with a white marker. Correct tool (either torque/star head or hex head) is taped to the inside of the case. Simply re-assemble rifle upon arrival in camp and shoot to verify zero- never an issue. I also put a simple cleaning kit and rod in case. Never an issue with those items.

Case I use. Pictured inside is the notice that TSA/ leaves inside when they inspect. I attach a strong ID tag on the outside and a copy of the picture page of my passport and copy of 4457 on the inside.

I have been on safari with one and traveled in the US. GFEAT for being able to stash LOTS of extra gear. They don't weigh much so you aren't wasting your baggage allowance.

I have always put my ammo in locked box bought from Tuffpak in my duffle thought you could not put ammo in same case with rifle

You can and do on domestic flights. International regs is where you get into 11 pounds and a locked ammo case.
 
From this chair, I don't want a humongous case that weighs a ton to start out with and one that's easily damaged (those huge aluminum steamer trunk units). I use the SKB referenced below. multiple trips and no problems. Two rifles, cleaning rods & stuff, bipods, spare parts, leatherman, and whatever else I can jam in it to make the weight limit, usually 50 lbs.

Big fan of my skb bow and rifle case. 4 trips now not one problem yet plus all the in states flights also with no problems or damage.

There is many good one to pick from all talked about on this thread will work.
 
In the Tuffpak video above the hunter puts his locked box of Ammo into his Tuffpak with his rifle.

I was under the impression that the locked ammo had to be separate from the unloaded firearms

Huh, me too. Thanks. But, the airlines seem to make their own requirements.
 
I use a 2 rifle SKB, Very Sturdy
 
Remember- US regs, like the referenced CFR, are US regs
