Afton Guest House

After showing us to our room Marius left to go back and pick up a guy on a late flight. We told the cook how we wanted our steaks, then went to the room to freshen up a bit from the long flight. I came back down and he had not started cooking yet. I drank a few beers and he hung around talking to me. His biggest concern was what I thought about coming in there to find a black man working there. Engee stopped by for a moment to introduce himself and then left. I don't think he was feeling well. We are tired and hungry, just want to eat and go to bed. Marius came back and the other guys flight was delayed. Apparently the cook was waiting on this other guy even though Marius told him it would be late. We finally got to eat and go to bed. When we got up in the morning, no one was around. Well, we figured we would just eat cereal, but there was no milk in the fridge. Marius came in and had to go wake up engee to get some milk but by this time we did not have time to eat and make it to the airport.

these are things that richard of the african hunting gazette needs to know as he is the new owner now, cant stay in business with that kind of operation.

My advice if you are using Afton....new ownership....not the same as with Annelise..
Confirm, confirm and finally confirm, if no reply in 24 hours, try again, apparently they did not "receive your e mail". Marius, the driver, is great, Mister X...fantastic. The rest of the new operation needs work. We got up to leave at seven am, no one around to pay....the cook had to wake someone, after twenty minutes finally showed up....either get with the business, or get out of it. We were 2 with another group of 4 trying to get to the airport, but waited on someone to settle up with....no itemization of charges, just a total..?so how much was that beer? Have used them three times in the past....not sure about the future tho. Upon our arrival on Delta 200 the nite before at SAPS some were really "hot" since their preapprovals were a problem....Mister X was doing his best, but when the 520 were never given to him for preapproval he had to get them approved on the fly...comments were made...no way in H..l are we paying for this $&@). Not a happy group. We went thru with no problem, but we were pre approved when Annelise was there.

5 of us stayed at the President's Lodge in May. Picked up at the Airport delivered to lodge. Fed well supper and breakfast. Very clean and very well managed. Totally secure in a safe area. Went out of their way for us and very reasonable price. Will stay there again.

Sorry to hear these bad reviews of the new owners. I booked Afton on my outfitters recommendation. I'll be there in two weeks. Hope that is enough time for them to get themselves in order.

A friend and I stayed at Afton on our way to hunt at KMG in late July, and we had a good experience. Mr. X's assistance was invaluable in sorting out a lost rifle (my friend's). He pretty much took charge in SAPS and with Delta baggage service to find out what had happened to the rifle, and what was going to be done about it. As first-timers in Africa, we'd have had a heck of a time sorting it out without his help! Once the rifle issue was handled, we were taken to Afton promptly, and were settled in a fed a good meal with little delay. They got us out and to Tambo for our flight to P.E. the next morning efficiently as well. We were happy with our stay there...sounds like a consistency issue, perhaps.

We are a lucky group. When arriving Joburg we have a variety of quality places to stay that cater to our lifestyle. I've stayed at most just because I like variety. Each of them fill a nich. The City Lodge for reasons already noted. Ease of getting to, no outside help needed going or returning. I like the Africa Sky for the solitude, people, quietness and the ability to walk around the grounds. For me, the Afton fits my requirements. In June I took six of my family on Safari at Huntershills. The Afton quoted the best deal by far. I used Hunters Support for the rifle clearance ( By the way, my 4457's we're the old ones. Still got my permits) just because I have used them in the past and the guys know me by sight. Anyway, Engee and his staff were great. They treated my family as their own and made my family's stay special. Just my two cents.
